Example: Anaphora
Most snakes move in a serpentine crawl. They throw their body into curves.
What is ‘they’?
In this example, we retrieve the identity of ‘they’ by looking back in the text
to the referent for the pronoun and we find ‘snakes’.
Example: Cataphora
It was a venomous one that small green snake.
Here we retrieve the identity of it by going forward in the text to that small
green snake.
In (a) an event follows another event. In (b), the temporal sequence has
rather to do with the speaker’s organisation of the things the speaker wants
to say: ‘First, I’m telling you that John didn’t have a spare tube. Next, I’m
telling you that he forgot his wrench too.’
