Sick Leave • Sick Leave : Provides pay to an amployee when he or she is out of work because of illness.Usually up to about 12 per year. • Sick leave pay causes difficulty for many employers. • The problem is that while employees use their sick days only when they are legitimately sick ,others use sick leave as extensions to vacations,whether they are sick or not . • In one survery ; Personal illnesses only about 45 % of unscheduled sick leave absences.Family issues 27 % , Personal needs 13 % , a mentality of entirement 9% and Stress 6 %. • A leave bank of paid time off ( PTO ) is another option; it basically gives employees a total figure for all annual time off. • Example :One hospital previously granted new employees 25days off/Yr. 25days off -10vacation ,3 personal days, 12 sick days. • The New PTO policy – 18 PTO days to use as they saw fit. • Catastrophic leaves-Short-term illness - absences 5 consecutive days. • Special absences like jury duty , bereavement leave. Parental leave & the Family and medical Leave Act • Parental leave is an employee benefit that provides paid or unpaid time off work to care for a child or make arrangements for the child’s welfare. • The term parental leave includes maternity (female),paternity(male) and adoption leave.Often ,the minimum benefits are stipulated by law. • Parental leave is important benefit . About half of workers today are women, and about 80% will become pregnant , during their work lives. • President Clinton singed the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993.(FMLA) Private employers( 50 employees) must provide employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for their own serious illness, the birth or adoption of a child, or the care of a seriously ill child, spouse or parent. Provide unused paid sick leave or annual leave as part of the 12wk leave. Provide Health benefits while they are on the unpaid leave. Must guarantee –to return to previous or equlvalent position with no loss of benefits at the end of the year.
