Tools of the Trade

The great thing about drawing is that it doesn't need anything more than the simplest of tools: a pen and paper. This simplicity brings
to the forefront the artist's skill and their knowledge of the elements of art.

Pencil Erasers

Pencils come in different lead grades that affect the
strength of the marks it makes. Using different lead grades
produces different effects.
Pencil Grading System
• H Grades - These are pencils with leads that have more
clay. They are harder and are less prone to smudging.
They are best used for outlines, sketches, and technical
drawings. The higher the number it is, the lighter the
mark.
• B Grades - These are pencils that have more graphite
content. They are softer, more pigmented, and easier to
smudge. These are good for creating shades. The
higher the number, the softer the lead.
Tools that are used to remove marks made by a
pencil. They are commonly used to fix mistakes,
but are also used to create white lines or spaces in
dark areas.
Pens
Pens are writing tools that use ink to make marks.
There are a wide variety of pens available, but the
modern pens have an internal reservoir and a cap
that makes it easy for artists to carry it around.

Drawing is the art of producing drawings on a surface. These
surfaces are typically paper or cloth, and tools are traditionally ink,
graphite, crayon, and charcoal.

Drawing is considered the fundamental skill that leads to creating

other forms of artwork.

to establish the basic shape, then create a dimension and
space by using the different techniques to establish tone and
value.
