Directions: Match the following pictures in group A to its meaning in

One of the ways to predict the weather is by measuring
the air
temperature. Weather conditions affect the day’s
temperature. To predict
weather in our surroundings, weather instruments can be
used in measuring different weather conditions. Weather
charts also presents weather components that determine
the weather condition at any given
time.

The following are the primary conditions/weather
components of the
atmosphere and the weather instruments used to measure
them:
1. Wind is the movement of air parallel to Earth's
surface.
 A wind vane is a device that tells the direction of the
wind. Wind direction is the direction from which the
wind is blowing (four directions: E- East, W-West, N-
North, and S-South).
o North wind - if the arrowhead of
the wind vane faces the north
direction
o East wind - if the arrowhead of the
wind vane faces the east direction
o If the arrowhead points between
North and East, we say, the wind is
blowing northeast.
 An anemometer measures
wind speed. The cups catch
the wind, turning a dial
attached to the instrument.
The dial shows the wind
speed. The speed of the wind
may be fast or slow.
Sometimes it blows gently but
at other times it blows fast.
 A windsock tells both the wind direction
and wind speed.
2. Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air
which is measured by a hygrometer.
 Hygrometer uses a pair of thermometers
where one bulb is open to the air and the other
has a bulb covered in a wet cloth. This cause
evaporation on the wet bulb and loss of heat
thus a drop in temperature reading. The relative
humidity can then be derived from the
temperature difference between the two
thermometers.
3. Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness on a definite
scale of air around us. Places near the equator have high
temperature because they receive direct rays of the sun. The time of
the day and time of the year also affect the air temperature.
 A thermometer is used to measure air temperature. A room
thermometer may bear the Fahrenheit, the Celsius scale, or both.
Air temperature is typically read in degrees Celsius or °C while the
Fahrenheit scale is mainly used in the United States.
 Liquid–in–glass (traditional
thermometer) -A thermometer has a
glass tube sealed at
both ends and is partly filled with a
liquid like mercury or alcohol. As the
environment
becomes hotter, the liquid inside the
thermometer expands causing a rise of
the
liquid level in the glass tube.
 An infrared thermometer (non-
contact thermometer) is a
thermometer which measures
temperature from a specific
surface portion of the object at a
safe distance. The thermometer
will compare the heat emitted by
the object with its surroundings.
4. Pressure is the weight of force
that is produced when something
presses or pushes against
something else.
 A barometer is a scientific
instrument that is used to measure
air pressure in a certain
environment. The level of liquid
inside it will indicate subtle
pressure changes caused by
weather elements.
5. Precipitation is the water that falls
into the ground as rain, snow etc.
 Rain Gauge. It measures the
amount of rain that has fallen
over a very specific time period.
6. Cloud formation is a visible mass
of particles of condensed vapor
suspended in the atmosphere of a
planet.
Observing the weather condition will help us decide the kind of
activities we will do for the day. Planning ahead can be aided by
weather predictions.
 Weather charts present about weather components that
determine the weather condition at any given time. Below is an
example of a
weather chart.
 Weather report is important because we can give accurate
data on different weather elements. Below is an example of
weather report.

A weather instrument is any type of measurement device that gives
information about the weather. Meteorologists and hobbyists use
many different types of weather instruments to gauge accurate
information about current climate and help to predict future
weather. These devices are used by atmospheric
scientists to sample the state of the atmosphere, or what it is doing,
at a given time. Unlike chemists, biologists, and physicists,
meteorologists do not use these instruments in a lab. They are used
in the field, placed outdoors as a suite of sensors which, together,
provide a complete picture of weather conditions.

closed glass tubes containing liquids such as alcohol or mercury. When air
around the tube heats the liquid, the liquid expands and moves up the tube. A
scale then shows what the actual temperature is. A thermometer may bear the
Fahrenheit, the Celcius scale or both. Air temperature is read in degrees
Fahrenheit or 0F and degrees Celsius or 0C. Temperature is the hotness and
coldness of air around us. It differs from place to place. The time of the day
and the time of the year also affect the air temperature.
2. A WIND VANE is an instrument that determines
the direction from which the wind is blowing. Wind
direction is the direction from which the wind is
blowing. The four letters E, W, N, S represent the
four directions: East, West, North, and South.
3. An ANEMOMETER measures wind speed. The speed of
the wind may be fast or slow. Sometimes it blows gently but
at the other times it blows fast.
Weather charts tell about weather components that

• Air Temperature-We have to look the temperature
(maximum or minimum) expected for the forecast period.
Daytime maximum temperatures usually occur between 1
to 4 PM. Night time minimum temperatures usually
occurs or at near sunrise.
• Wind Speed and Direction-Wind speed and direction are
important for monitoring and predicting weathers patterns
and global climate.
Wind speed refers to how fast the wind
blows. It is usually expressed in kilometer per hour. Wind
direction describes the direction on a compass from which the wind
emanates, for instance from the North of from the
West. Shifts in wind direction may indicate changes in
weather.
• Sky Condition- describes the average fraction of the sky
covered by cloud. Clear or sunny means that less than 20 per cent of the sky
has cloud. It consist of two main areas: cloud cover and probability of
precipitation. Probability of precipitation is the likelihood that it will rain,
snow, sleet, or hail. Meteorologists use several instruments and scientific
calculations to figure out this probability.
Cloud cover is based on observations more than
calculations. Cloud cover is the amount of sky that is covered by clouds.

simply looking at the sky today and predicting the
weather tomorrow.
Weather influences our lives. It is important to know
what makes the weather change so often.

Weather is a condition of the atmosphere at any given
time and place. There are different weather instruments
being used to predict the weather for a day. A
meteorologist is a man who studies or deals about the
atmosphere and the weather. They use different
weather instruments to predict the weather for the day.
A thermometer is used to measure temperature. A room
thermometer has numbers on each side. Air temperature is read
in degrees Fahrenheit (˚F) and degrees Celsius (˚C). The right
side shows the Celsius reading. Its highest number is 100 while
its lowest is 0. The number near the end of the red column tells
the temperature of the air. Red alcohol or mercury is a substance
that is very sensitive to heat. When the air is hot, the liquid
expands and rises. When the air is cold, the liquid becomes
heavy and sinks.

the north direction,
we say, the wind is blowing north. It is
the North wind. If the

North-east.

on arms attached to a rotating shaft.
The cups turn around when pushed
by the wind. As the wind blows
faster, the cups turn faster, too.
When the wind blows gently, the
cups turn slower. A change in speed
of the cups indicates a change in
wind speed.
A wind sock can show both
the wind speed and wind
direction. The wind sock
rotates on a pole and shows
the direction of the wind. If
the sock is blowing straight
out, it shows that the
wind is strong. If the sock
is limp, there is a very light
wind.
