Electrical protections

What are electrical protections?

Electrical protections refer to

various safety measures and
devices implemented in electrical
systems to protect them from
potential hazards, such as
electrical faults, overloads, short
circuits, and other abnormal
conditions. These protections are
crucial for maintaining the integrity
of the electrical system, preventing
damage to equipment, and
ensuring the safety of individuals
working with or around electrical
installations. 2

7
ELECTRICAL RECLOSER

The electrical recloser is a switch with

automatic reclosing, normally installed in
the distribution lines.

It is a protection device that can detect an

overcurrent, interrupt it and automatically
reconnect to re-energize the line.

DPS

Surge arresters (SPDs) are

equipment designed to protect
transformers and distribution
networks in general, against
surges caused by atmospheric
discharge or by surges inherent
in the network.

FUSES OF POWER

Power fuses are protective devices used in electrical

systems to prevent damage to equipment and cables due
to current overloads. Their main function is to interrupt the
flow of electric current when it exceeds a safe level, thus
avoiding fire hazards or component damage.

These fuses are designed with a conductive material that

melts when the electric current reaches a predetermined
level, breaking the circuit and stopping the flow of current.
This protects downstream components and equipment
connected to the fuse. 11

-Protection systems are essential to ensure the
safety, stability and reliability of electric power
transmission and distribution networks.
