Concept of

Disaster Risk
Reduction
(DRR) and
Disaster Risk
Reduction
and
Management
(DRRM)
– Disaster risk reduction is aimed at
preventing new and reducing existing
disaster risk and managing residual risk,
all of which contribute to strengthening
resilience and therefore to the achievement
of sustainable development.
– Disaster risk management is the application of
disaster risk reduction policies and strategies to
prevent new disaster risk, reduce existing
disaster risk and manage residual risk,
contributing to the strengthening of resilience
and reduction of disaster losses.
What is disaster
risk reduction
and
management
(DRRM) key
concepts and
principles?
– Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) aims to reduce the
damage caused by natural hazards like earthquakes,
floods, droughts and cyclones, through an ethic of
prevention. Disasters often follow natural hazards. A
disaster's severity depends on how much impact a
hazard has on society and the environment.
What are the
concepts of
disaster
management?
– Disaster management is a
process of effectively
preparing for and
responding to disasters.
– It involves strategically organizing resources to
lessen the harm that disasters cause. It also
involves a systematic approach to managing the
responsibilities of disaster prevention,
preparedness, response, and recovery
What is concept
of disaster risk?
– The potential loss of life, injury, or destroyed or
damaged assets which could occur to a system,
society or a community in a specific period of
time, determined probabilistically as a function
of hazard, exposure, vulnerability and capacity.
Concepts of disaster management?

– (1) hazard, risk, and vulnerability (HRV) analysis;

– (2) mitigation;
– (3) response (including alert and warning, impact,
immediate post-impact, and rescue);
– (4) recovery and reconstruction;
– (5) education
What are the 4
types of
disaster
management?
– Emergency managers think of
disasters as recurring events with
four phases: Mitigation,
Preparedness, Response, and
Recovery
Community-based disaster risk
reduction and management for
preparedness
– 1. Emergency plan
– 2. Monitoring and Evaluation
– 3. Early Warning Systems
– 4. Survival kits and material
