What is ‘Work experience’?
•Provides you with an opportunity to develop your practical and technical skills

•All students should go out on work experience as part of your study programme for a week. The date of your work experience is:

•Work experience takes place every day and during normal office hours or as stipulated by the employer.

•You are required to work for 30 hours.


Why take part in WEX?
• Provides YOU with an insight into
different sectors and careers.

• Gives you the opportunity to use and


apply your skills and knowledge in a
professional environment.

• Aids the development of ‘employability


skills’ -sometimes called ‘soft skills’ –
that are required not only in the
workplace, but in life. These include
communication, working with others
and problem solving.
Why take part in WEX?
• Provides knowledge of the local job market and starts students on the
road to building a network of business contacts.

• An opportunity to impress local businesspeople

• Valuable experience to add to a CV or Personal Statement.

• Many employers are happy to offer a reference, which students can use
when applying for jobs, either while they are still at college or later.
What Do Employers Expect From Students?
• Be ready to work, work safely and within company rules
• Good time keeping – be punctual
• Follow instructions and ask if you are unsure of anything
• Ask questions, it shows you are interested!
• Discuss any concerns as they arise with your supervisor or your
tutor
• A smile  - it shows you are interested and enthusiastic
What Do Employers Expect From Students?
• Remember that you are an ambassador for HCUC out in the local
community where people know who you are and who we are.
• Be appropriately dressed, punctual, polite and well behaved.
• Work hard and make an effort to contribute, asking questions where
you need to – you are there to learn and to experience!
• The following week, write a thank you email or letter to your
employer
• Complete your journal and confirm your hours in navigate.
How to arrange WEX

• MAKE A LIST OF WHO TO ASK


• Family
• Friends, family of friends, friends of friends!
• High Street. Walk in and ask.
• Google search and call or email employers
• Present employers
• Past employers
• Where you socialise….cinema, restaurants, gym, clubs
• Charities
The 3 P’s.
Plan – Think about your journey, what you will wear and eat?

Prepare – Use the knowledge that you have learned

Professionalism – Always remain professional


Activity 1 – Individual Activity

• On your own, write down a minimum of three places that you would like
to go on work experience placement.

Duration – 2 minutes
WHAT I NEED FROM YOU BEFORE YOU
GO!
1. Company name, address and telephone number to me and your tutor.

2. Your contact’s name, position in company, email and telephone number.

3. A copy or photo of the Employer Liability Insurance.


4. A copy or photo of the Health and Safety Policy Document.
NO DOCUMENTS? NO GO!!!

5. YOU NEED TO ADD YOUR PLACEMENT ONTO NAVIGATE.

4. DURING. Your daily journal.
5. AFTER. Hit the COMPLETE button on the top right!!
Benefits of Navigate

Remember to log all of your enrichment and employability activities


throughout your time at college.
All the information logged in ‘Navigate’ can be exported to your CV and
shown to future employers or used as supporting evidence for your
personal statement!
