High Pressure Closed Vessel
cc 360

The HPCV ( high pressure closed vessel ) is

an apparatus designed to test
the ballistic combustion properties of gun
.propellants in a closed chamber
During the HPCV operation, peak pressures,
rates and vivacities are
recorded and calculated for development or
comparison of different
propellants lots

I.M.I. HPCV
The IMI HPCV is made from a high strength /high fracture toughness steel
alloy main-body, and 2 self sealing, end plugs. One plug contains a
remotely operated pressure relief valve and a piezo-electric transducer
adapter, the other an electrode set for propellant ignition via a glow wire
( inserted in a thin cloth bag containing fine grained, packed, ignition
propellant ). A cooling fluid jacket encloses the main body, a remote air /oil
intercooler provides temperature control for continues firing. The HPCV is
mounted in a swivel- base mount for ease of operation.

Pressure Limitations
The apparatus is designed for a maximum working pressures of 5,000 bar.

Temperature Limitation
Maximum temperature allowed for propellant loading : 35° C ( inner
chamber temp.

CLOSED VESSEL TEST
HPCV peripheral equipment - For system operation, the following
recommended equipment ( or similar ) is required :
Piezo pressure gage, model 6211/6203, manufactured by the Kistler
company.
Charge amplifier, model 5007, manufactured by the Kistler company.
Gage seals, cables, connectors and all other required gage accessories.
Signal analyzer, model 4094B containing an oscilloscope and data recording
features, manufactured by the Nicolet company.
Signal processing computer card and software, Nicolet Team Pro or similar.
Air pressure source ( electric compressor ) : 8÷12 atm.
Cooling system - Oil intercooler containing a low pressure, approximately
1h.p electric liquid pump and an air or water cooled radiator. The cooling
liquid should be routed to the HPCV through a ½ ÷ 1” tubing system
containing a filter and bypass valve.

Note: If firing rate is below 1 shot/ 2÷3 hours, cooling system is not
necessary.

CLOSED VESSEL TEST
Preliminary operational preparation
Before conducting routine operation, the HPCV MUST BE TRAIL TESTED
with certified propellant from a known characteristics lot.
For the initial firings trails, we recommend using NC NG MOD( M-26), the
following single
shot firing order should be conducted 72 grams.

Note : If using an energetic propellant, weights should be reduce

proportionally.

A calibration graph should be constructed to determine HPCV characteristics

with NC NG MOD( M-26) propellant.

CLOSED VESSEL TEST

TEST RESULT:
Pressure rising of individual function, in the closed vessel test, is used to
calculate required values such as:
FORCE, VIVACITY, PROGRESSIVITY, RISE TIME etc.
All parameters depend on the physical conditions of the material:
FORCE – depends on the caloric value of the material.
PROGRESSIVITY – depends on the grain dimensions and geometry – burn
surface.
VIVACITY – depend on pressure rising speed.
All the results are recorded in a table on an excel format report.
As results are recorded, the "RELATIVE" results are achieved:
RELATIVE FORCE – average relative pressure of the test results
RELATIVE VIVACITY – average relative vivacity of the test results
FACTOR PROGRESSIVITY – average progress of burn surface burning
