Conservation of Energy

Energy
• Energy is the ability to do work
• The SI unit of Energy is the Joule (J)
• There are several forms of Energy:
• Mechanical
• Potential
• Kinetic
• Non-mechanical Energy
• Heat
• Chemical
• Electrical
• Light
• Sound
• Nuclear
• Solar
Mechanical Energy
• Potential energy
• Is stored energy
• It is determined by the position of
the object
• There are various types of stored
energy such as chemical,
gravitational, elastic
• Kinetic energy is responsible for
movement
• Kinetic energy is mainly associated
with motion or physical movement
Sources of Energy
• Renewable or Non-Renewable
Conservation of Energy
• Energy is neither created or destroyed,
it is converted (or transformed) from
one form to another
• Examples:
• Photosynthesis
• Fossil Fuels
• Generator
Turbines and Generators
• It converts mechanical energy into electrical energy
• Windmills, Water Turbines, Fossil fuels
