In a moment, you’ll watch a news video titled:

Detecting deepfakes
Watch the video and answer the questions.

A.What does the term ‘deepfake’ mean?

B. What does the project by Facebook, Microsoft

and a bunch of academics involve?

C. What should people look out for to detect

deepfakes on social media sites?

D.What good application of deepfake technology

did the speaker mention?

E. What is an example of the wrong use of

deepfakes given by the speaker?

17
Let’s check your answers.
A. What does the term ‘deepfake’ mean?
A deepfake is when you face-swap, you put somebody else's face on something and it'll look like it's a
different person; there is also voice swapping.
B. What does the project by Facebook, Microsoft and a bunch of academics involve?
It is a deepfake detection challenge. They actually hired some actors and they've commissioned a whole
bunch of deepfake so they're actually making deepfakes to teach the computers that they're fake.
C. What should people look out for to detect deepfakes on social media sites?
Look critically at what you're looking at. When it's real information and it sounds like it it's too good to
be true or too weird. The other way is to look for obvious stuff like an earring missing, two eyebrows,
shadows falling in the wrong place, something looks askew in the background, the mouth doesn't quite
move, you look a little bit like The Lion King as opposed to like a real person.
D. What good application of deepfake technology did the speaker mention?
You can bring back all your old favorite actors and make new movies with them so that's going to be a
really wonderful use of this technology.
E. What is an example of the wrong use of deepfakes given by the speaker?
Taking a video of Einstein, putting in a computer and making a brand-new lecture which wasn't actually
Einstein’s and in which Einstein will be saying crazy stuff.

18
Discuss the questions.

➔ What might be the political ramifications of using such technology?

➔ Should you be concerned that your photos or videos might be deepfaked?
➔ What could be some positive applications of deepfakes?
➔ Is knowing the truth nowadays a challenge? Why?/Why not? What kind of
problems could it cause?
➔ How can governments or corporations deal with online misinformation?
Who should be responsible for verifying content?
