Introduction to Safety Management

 If you want to reduce the costs and risks associated with

workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities, you should place as
much emphasis on safety and health in your workplace as you
do on other management issues such as production, sales,
transportation and quality control.

The Elements of a Safety Management System are:

 Commitment and Leadership

• Accountability

• Safety Involvement
 Safety Communications

 Continuous Improvement
Accident prevention

Accident prevention
refers to the strategies,
policies, systems, and
activities that are
designed to minimize or eliminate the risk of accidents,
injuries, and illnesses. It involves identifying potential
hazards, assessing the risks, and taking measures to control
or eliminate them before incidents occur.
How Can Companies Prevent Accidents?

 Training employees to identify different hazards.

 Posting appropriate signage .
 Instituting safety policies .
 Maintaining safety logs.
 Identifying hazards in the workplace and creating a safety
plan to eliminate the risks.
 Regularly test safety equipment .
 Create emergency action plans.

Health and safety training:
Training means helping people to learn how to do something,
telling people what they should or should not do, or simply
giving them information.

Why provide health and safety training?

 Ensure that people who work for you know how to work
safely and without risks to health.
 Develop a positive health and safety culture, where safe and
healthy working becomes second nature to everyone.
 Meet your legal duty to protect the health and safety of your
employees.
What are the Benefits of Safety Training
Programs?

 Increases Employee Awareness

 Reduce Accidents and Injuries
 Help Retain Talent
 Boost Productivity
 Stronger Safety Culture
 Save Money and Reduce Stress
Communicating safety measures
Creating a safe workplace is the
responsibility of both employer and employee, and the
best way to achieve this is to ensure that your workplace
safety procedures and protocols are communicated
effectively throughout the entire company. It is needed
to ensure roles and directions are understood; to warn
against dangers; to avoid unsafe practices; to promote
critical emergency response and particularly to learn
about the concerns and hazards that workers encounter.
Communicating safety measures
There are three basic types of methods of
communication in health and safety:

 Verbal Communication
 Written Communication
 Graphic Communication
Effective Ways to Communicate Workplace Safety:

 Send an email/newsletter. You should be communicating

regularly with your employees ensuring that they are kept
up to date with news and information, and changes to
safety procedures or protocols. Try having a monthly
safety focus, or send out a ‘safety snippet’ with every
paycheck.
 Use pictures and videos. In both the above points, you
need to be engaging your employees, and using visuals is
the best way to do this. Try using images and videos to get
the message across, and to demonstrate the correct
procedure.
Effective Ways to Communicate
Workplace Safety:
 Hold regular meetings. Make workplace safety a priority
for everyone, by engaging them and asking them if they
have any concerns, and to review safety procedures.
Making safety meetings mandatory will also help keep
safety at the top of the employee’s minds.
 Routine safety checks. It’s better to find a safety threat
earlier, than when it’s too late and a worker has been
injured. Make it part of the supervisor’s role to
undertake routine safety checks, ensuring all workers are
wearing correct PPE and using equipment safety.
