BASKETBALL

Dr. James Naismith, a

physical education teacher at
a YMCA in Springfield, MA
invented the game of
basketball to keep his
students active during the
cold winter months of
Massachusetts. The game
was played with a peach
basket that was nailed to the
wall 10 feet off the ground
and a soccer ball. Dribbling
was not originally allowed in
the game.

New York with 9
players. The final
score of the game
was 1-0.

THREE POINT LINE- The three-point line in
basketball is an arc-shaped line near each basket
that determines how many points a successful shot
is worth in basketball. 23.5ft or 22ft and 9inches
from the center of the hoop.
FREE THROW LINE- The free throw line in
basketball is the line placed 15 feet in front of the
hoop parallel with the end lines. This is where all
free throws are attempted from.
CENTER CIRCLE- Center circle in a basketball
is the circle located at the middle of the court, and
used to put the ball into play via jump balls.
MIDCOURT LANE- In basketball is a line
on a basketball court that is located in the
center, dividing it equally into two pieces. It is
also known as the timeline and the half-court
line.
BASELINE/ ENDLINE- The Baseline also
known as the endlines, these are boundary
lines that run underneath the basket on each
side of the court.
BACKBOARD- The backboard is a raised
board that is mounted vertically on top of a
pole and which serves as the mounting for the
BASKET(HOOP) - The basketball hoop is one of
the most integral parts of the game (Basketball)
because in order to make a basket, you need a hoop.
The basketball hoop consists of a net dangling from a
metal rim, which is connected to a backboard. The
basket are visually mounted at a certain height which
is about 4ft in the baseline and 10ft from the floor.
SIDELINES- The sidelines are the two boundaries
lines running the length of the court.
FREE THROW LANE- is the space on a basketball
court from the baseline to the free throw line. Since
the basket is located in the free throw lane, this area
is pivotal for both offense and the defense.

BASIC SKILLS
1. POSITIONING
2. SHOOTING
3. REBOUNDING
4. PASSING
5. DRIBBLING
6. BLOCKING
POSITIONING
POINT GUARD - usually the fastest player on
the team, organizes the team's offense by
controlling the ball and making sure that it gets
to the right player at the right time.
SHOOTING GUARD- creates a high volume
of shots on offense, mainly long-ranged; and
guards the opponent's best perimeter player on
defense.
SMALL FORWARD- often primarily
responsible for scoring points via cuts to the
basket and dribble penetration; on defense seeks
POWER FORWARD- plays
offensively often with their back to
the basket; on defense, plays under
the basket (in a zone defense) or
against the opposing power
forward (in man-to-man defense).
CENTER- uses height and size to
score (on offense), to protect the
basket closely (on defense), or to
SHOOTING
The act of attempting to score points by
throwing the ball through the basket,
methods of varying with players and
situations.
A player faces the basket with both feet
facing the basket
A player will rest the ball on the
fingertips of the dominant hand (the
shooting arm) slightly above the head,
The ball is usually shot by jumping
(though not always) and extending the
shooting arm
The shooting arm, fully extended
with the wrist fully bent, is held
stationary for a moment following the
release of the ball known as a follow-
through
Players may shoot directly into the
basket or may used to backboard to
3 TYPES OF SHOOTING

JUMP SHOT
LAY- UP
SLAM DUNK
REBOUNDING
2 CATEGORIES OF REBOUNDING

OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS - in which the

ball is recovered by the offensive side and
does not change possession

DEFENSIVE REBOUNDS- in which the

defending team gains possession of the
loose ball
PASSING
6 TYPES OF PASS
1. CHEST PASS
2. BOUND PASS
3. OVERHEAD PASS
4. OUTLET PASS
5. NO-LOOK PASS
6. BEHIND THE BACK PASS
CHEST PASS
The ball is passed
directly from the
passers chest to the
receiver's chest. A
proper chest pass
involved an outward
snap of the times to
add velocity and
leaves the defense
little time to react.
BOUNCE PASS
The passer bounces the ball
crisply about two-thirds of
the way from his own chest
to the receiver
The ball strikes the court and
bounces up to wards the
receiver
The bounce pass takes
longer to complete the the
chest pass, but it is also
harder for the opposing team
to intercept (kicking the ball
deliberately is a violation)
OVERHEAD PASS
Used to pass
the ball over a
defender
The ball is
released while
over the
passer's head
OUTLET PASS
Occurs after a
team gets a
defensive
rebound
Next patch
after rebonding
NO LOOK PASS
A special way
of doing this is
passing the
ball without
looking at the
receiving
teammate
BEHIND THE BACK PASS
Advanced style
of passing the
ball

Involves
throwing the ball
behind the
passer's back to a
BLOCKING
Performed
when after a shot
is attempted. A
defender
succeeds in
altering the shot
by touching the
ball
DRIBBLING
The act of bouncing the
ball continuously with
one hand, and is a
requirement for a player
to take steps with the ball

A player pushes the ball

down towards the ground
with the fingertips rather
than patting it; this
ensures greater control
