JOB DESCRIPTION

DET 50093:
UNIT 3
Here is where your
presentation begins!
MULTIMETER
• A multimeter or a multitester, also known as a
VOM (volt-ohm-milliammeter), is an electronic
measuring instrument that combines several
measurement functions in one unit.
• A typical multimeter can measure voltage,
current, and resistance.
• Analog multimeters use a microammeter with a
moving pointer to display readings.
MULTIMETER PRECAUTIONS AND
CALIBRATIONS
• De-energize and discharge the circuit completely before connecting or
disconnecting a multimeter
• Never apply power to the circuit while measuring resistance with a multimeter
• Connect the multimeter in series with the circuit for current measurements and in
parallel for voltage measurements
• Be certain the multimeter is switched to ac before attempting to measure ac
circuits
• Observe proper dc polarity when measuring DC. When you are finished with a
multimeter, switch it to the OFF position, if available
• If there is no OFF position, switch the multimeter to the highest AC voltage
position
• Always start with the highest voltage or current range
INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTER
• Insulation resistance tester (Megohmmeter) is a special type of ohmmeter
used to measure the electrical resistance of insulators.
• To measure a high value resistance, techniques for measuring a low value
current are used
• A constant voltage source is applied to the resistance to be measured and the
resulting current is read on a highly sensitive ammeter circuit that can display
the resistance value
• Insulating components, for example cable jackets, must be tested for their
insulation strength at the time of commissioning and as part of maintenance
of high voltage electrical equipment and installations.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
• When putting the point to be measured, extra precautions are needed
to prevent uncoated parts are not exposed to hand
• When not using the meter, remove the probe
• Check whether the meter movement moves 0 @ not by combining
positive and negative probes
• Keep the meter not to crash
