Definition
Suppose that f(x) is defined when x is near the number a. Then we write
lim f ( x)  L
x a

and we say " The limit of f(x) as x approaches a is equal to L".

Or, we can also say : f ( x)  L as x  a

lim f ( x)  L  lim f ( x)  lim f ( x)  L

Theorem: Infinite Limits
Suppose that f(x) is defined function on both
sides of a, except at a itself. Then,
lim f ( x )   means that the value of f(x) can
x a

be made arbitrary large positively as we approach a but not equal to a.

Similary,
lim f ( x )   means that the value of f(x) can
x a

be made arbitrary large negatively as we approach a but not equal to a.

Definition: Vertical Asymptote
The vertical line x  a is called a vertical asymptote of the curve
y  f ( x) if at least one of the following statements is true :

lim f ( x)   , lim f ( x)   , lim f ( x)  
