1.1a. Algebra Fraction, Addition or Subtraction

a. Adding fractions with equal denominators

• To add or subtract two like fractions, simply add or subtract the numerators and put the result over
the common denominator

Adding fractions which unequal denominators

◦ To add or subtract fractions which don’t have equal denominators, MUST BE COVERTED to equivalent
fractions that do have a common denominators.

1. Find the least common multiple of denominators. When applied to fractions , this number called the least common
denominators (LCD) of the fractions.
2. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction that has the LCD as its denominator. To do this multiply the
numerator and denominator each fractions.
3. Add the numerator and place over the common denominator.
4. Simplify the result to the lowest form
