RADIATION

• Radiation is an energy
that is released from
unstable atoms and
from some devices in
the from energetic
particles or Photons like
gamma ray or x-rays.
TYPES OF RADIATION
• Ionizing Radiation- Radiation those
interact with the matter causing
ionization by changing nuclei of
the atoms of the substances
through which radiation pass
including human body.
• Non-ionizing radiations are those
do not cause nuclear changes but
can harm human body.
Wavelength between 100 nm and
1 km (Harmful).
EFFECTS ON HUMAN BODY
• Somatic Effect- Effect appearing
on oneself who was exposed to
radiation.

• Hereditary Effect- Effect

appearing on the descendants of
the one due to the changes and
damage in the germ cell who
was exposed.
CONTROLLING THE RADIATION
HAZARD
• Time- Spend less time on radiation work area
including reducing exposure time following the
ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).

• Distance- Increasing distance from the

radioactive source reduces the dose due to the
inverse square law.

I1d12 = I2d22

• Shielding- Sources of radiation can be shielded

with solid or liquid material, which absorbs the
energy of the radiation. Example- Collimator,
Lead sheets, Concrete wall, Container etc.
