Lesson 6.

Calculations from Moles

to Mass and Vice Versa

General Chemistry 1
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Chemical reactions occur around us. Some occur naturally,
while others are man-made.

2
The amount of
reactant and products
must be determined in
certain processes such
as the manufacturing
of medicine or
extraction of valuable
minerals from ores.
3
Recall that chemical
reactions involve the
rearrangement of
atoms, and that atoms
are so minuscule that
one gram of a
substance may
contain billions of
these atoms.
4
In the previous lessons, we learned about the unit mole
and how it can be related to the number of particles, and to
the mass of the substance. In this lesson, we will learn how
to convert moles to mass, and vice versa.

5
What is the relationship
between mole and mass?

6
Learning Competency
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to do the following:

Calculate the mass of a given number of moles

of an element or compound and vice versa.
(STEM_GC11S-Ie-29).

7
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to do the following:

● Introduce the mass and mole relationship.

● Determine the mass of a given number of moles

of an element or compound and vice versa.

8
Mole to Mass Relationship

The relationship between mass and mole is given by the

molar mass.

Tips

You can use dimensional analysis in

converting mass to moles and vice
versa. The molar mass can act as
the conversion factor. To do this,
make sure that you always write
both the values and the units
involved in the conversion.
30
Check Your Understanding

Write true if the statement is correct. Otherwise, write

false.

1. Mass and mole are interconvertible

2. Molar mass is not essential in converting mass to mole.
3. The unit of mass used in converting mole to mass is
always in kilograms.

31
Check Your Understanding

Complete the table below.

Substance Mass (g) Moles (mol)

lithium 15 (1)

sulfur (2) 2.4

argon 22 (3)

32
Let’s Sum It Up!

The mole to mass and mass to mole relationship is

shown below.

33
Challenge Yourself

Is it possible to get the same moles

from two different masses of two
different compounds?
