"It is better to light a candle than curse the
darkness" is a Chinese proverb
meaning better to do something about a
problem than just complain about it. Further,
a candle is a small answer to a large problem,
but it is still a worthy step in the right direction,
rather than just bemoaning the problem
(of darkness)
 Amnesty International
Amnesty are a pressure group. Their purpose is
to protect people wherever justice, fairness,
freedom and truth are denied.

Amnesty have 2.2 million members

worldwide who are passionate about
their beliefs and not afraid to take
unpopular stands to realise their vision
and mission.

 Beijing Olympics
In 2008 Beijing was chosen to host the Olympic Games. A
number of concerns and controversies surfaced before,
during, and after the 2008 Summer Olympics, and which
received major media coverage.

Leading up to the Olympics, there were concerns about

human rights in China, such that many high-profile
individuals, such as politicians and celebrities, announced
intentions to boycott the games to protest China's role in the
Darfur conflict, and Myanmar, its stance towards Tibet and
other aspects of its human rights record.

 Human Rights abuses in China
China has a long history of Human Rights abuses.
An estimated 500,000 people are currently enduring detention
without charge or trial, and millions are unable to access the
legal system.
Harassment, surveillance, house arrest, and imprisonment of
human rights defenders are on the rise, and censorship of the
Internet and other media has grown.
Repression of minority groups continues, including Tibetans and
Christians who practice their faith outside of state recognised
churches.
China remains the leading executioner in the world.
 Akmal Shaikh Execution
• Akmal Shaikh was a British citizen who was
accused of drug smuggling.
• He was executed in China December last year.
