Who is Darwin?

Charles Robert Darwin (1809 – 1882)

What is evolution
Evolution is the process of change in heritable
traits of biological organisms over generations.

• This change can be the result of

natural selection, genetic drift, or
mutation.
Darwin’s theory of evolution
Darwin proposed that species can change over time, that new
species come from pre-existing species, and that all
species share a common ancestor.

The mechanism that Darwin proposed for evolution is natural

selection. Because resources are limited in nature, organisms
with heritable traits that favor survival and reproduction will tend
to leave more offspring than their peers, causing the traits to
increase in frequency over generations.
The six main points of Darwin’s theory

1. Overproduction

2. Competition

3. Genetic Variation

4. Adaptation

5. Natural Selection

6. Speciation
