What is Safety? Safety can be defined as a term used when precautions are taken to control situations and acts in order to prevent damage to person/s involved and workshop or its equipment/materials. Safe Workshop Habits Long pieces of timber should be carried by persons – one at each end. Note position of fire extinguisher. Note position of first aid box. Report any illness you may feel. Burn oily rags. Clothing Safety Rules Keep long hair out of eyes. Remove wrist watches. Roll up shirt sleeves above elbows. Wear protective clothing Remove tie. Instances where accidents in a workshop occur when: Lifting, moving and storing materials and jobs. Handling and using tools. Striking or stepping on obstructions left on floors or benches. Handling/using machines and portable power tools. Safety Rules when carrying and storing hand tools Don’t carry sharp edged or pointed tools in apron pockets. Store tools in tool kit or correct places immediately after use. When passing edged or pointed tools to a fellow worker, pass them handle first.
