PERIMETER,

AREA AND
VOLUME

PERIMETER
• What is perimeter?
• The measurement along the outside of a shape.
• It is calculated by adding the lengths of the sides together.

• 11cm + 8cm +11cm + 8cm

• =38cm
3

PERIMETER
• Sometimes we need to calculate the length of a side before we can add them together.

• Long side: 5cm + 3cm

• =8cm
• Short side: 7cm – 5cm
• =2cm
• Perimeter = 8cm + 5cm + 2cm + 3cm + 5cm + 7cm
• =30cm

PYTHAGORAS AND PERIMETER

When we have a RIGHT-ANGLED triangle, we can use Pythagoras’ theorem.

a2 + b2 = c2
5

PYTHAGORAS
• When you are looking for the hypotenuse (long side),
• You ADD.

• When you are looking for the base or height (short sides),
• You MINUS

• a2 + b2 = c2
• 182 + 152 = c2
• 324 + 225 = c2
• 549 = c2
• c = 23,43

PYTHAGORAS
• When you are looking for the hypotenuse (long side),
• You ADD.

• When you are looking for the base or height (short sides),
• You MINUS

• a2 + b2 = c2
• x2 + 802 = 1002
• x2 + 6400 = 10000
• x2 = 10000 - 6400
• x2 = 3600
• x=
• x = 600

CIRCUMFERENCE OF A CIRCLE
• The circumference of a circle is the outside measurement or the perimeter.
• Formula:
• Circumference of a circle = 2
• = pi
• = 3,142
• r = radius (length from the center of the circle to the edge.)

10

AREA
• The amount of space a shape takes up in total.
• This is a FORMULA based equation.
11

AREA OF A SQUARE
• Area of a square = Length x Breadth
• Area of a square = l x b
• Area of a square = l2
12

AREA OF A RECTANGLE
• Area of a rectangle = Length x Breadth (the longest side is length.)
• Area of a rectangle = l x b
13

AREA OF A TRIANGLE
• Area of a triangle = Perpendicular Height
• Area of a triangle = ⊥h
