OVERVIEW AND IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL
CHEMISTRY (1)
• Environmental chemistry is a multidisciplinary study of chemical,
biological, and integrated processes of the environment at large.
• The natural environment includes components of air, water, soil and
land, as well as biota found in those compartments.
• The complex interactions that occur between the natural and physical
environments are key to defining the broad definition of environmental
chemistry, and vital for understanding the larger context of
environmental science.
• Its scope is considerable, ultimately encompassing targeted areas of
study including atmospheric chemistry, biogeochemistry, chemical
toxicology, marine chemistry, soil and sediment chemistry, water
chemistry, astrochemistry, fire chemistry, chemistry of energy, Earth and
geochemistry, and climate change
