Endangered Species
• An endangered species is at risk of extinction at any given time, most
of these activities come from human activity. Extinct species are no
longer exist anywhere on Earth and once they are gone they are gone
forever.
• Extirpated species have become extinct locally or regionally but are
not completely gone and may still survive in captivity.
• Threatened species are at risk of becoming endangered in the near
future.
Causes of Endangered Species
• Habitat Destruction

Many species have become extinct or endangered due to habitat

destruction for human land-use purposes.
Forests are being heavily logged, swamps drained and grasslands
developed into cities.
Causes of Endangered Species
• Unsustainable Hunting

Overhunting and overfishing have threatened species since hunting

and fishing were originally developed for sustenance.
A few species affected by unsustainable hunting are elephants, tiger,
rhinos, bears, deer and panthers.
Causes of Endangered Species
• Large Predators and Trophies

Many large predators are killed because they compete with human
hunters for wild game like deer and elk.
Species like mountain lions, wolves, bears, panthers and cougars are
also hunted and showcased as trophies.
Causes of Endangered Species
• Global Warming

Global warming is caused by increased concentrations of

greenhouse gases in the atmosphere resulting in a rise of the
planet’s temperatures. Climate change not only raises average
temperatures but also extreme weather events, shifting wildlife
populations and habitats, and rising seas.
Ways to Save Endangered Species
• Never purchase products made from threatened or endangered
species i.e. crocodile skinned bags, mink fur coats
• Protect wildlife habitat and mating/nesting areas i.e. sea turtles
• Make your home wildlife friendly i.e. bird feeds, compost, garden
• Learn about endangered species in your area i.e. support local wildlife
sanctuary/rehabilitation
