1. SIMPLE PRESENT

 I am a student.  We live in Danang.
 She is cute.  The Sun rises in the East.
 They are doctors.  He goes to school everyday.

NEGATIVE  S + am/is/are + not  S + do/does + not + V-inf


 He isn’t humorous.  Vegetarians don’t eat meat.
 Turtles aren’t fast.  She doesn’t like coffee.

INTERROGATIVE  Am/Is/Are + S  Do/Does + S + V-inf

1. SIMPLE PRESENT
I. PRESENT TENSES

 USAGE: Simple present is used when we talk about:


 Truths (Ex: Whale is the largest mammal.)

 Habits at present (Ex: I wake up late every morning.)

 Schedules, plans (Ex: Bus no.1 arrives at 3p.m.)

 SIGNS: Frequency adverbs

 Always/Constantly/Forever > Usually/Frequently > Often >


Sometimes/Occasionally > Seldom/Rarely > Never

 Everyday/daily, every week/weekly, every month/monthly, every year/ yearly


2. PRESENT CONTINUOUS
I. PRESENT TENSES

 FORM: S + am/is/are + V-ing


 I am making cookies. (make, take, shake, date, type,…)
 You are lying. (lie, die,…)
 The children are putting on their shoes. (put, win, get,…)
 USAGE: Present continuous is used when we talk about:
 Actions happening at or around the moment of speaking
 Fixed plans in near future
 Repeated irritating actions (+ always/constantly/forever)
 SIGNS:
 Now, right now, at present, at the moment, today, this week, this month, this
year.
 Imperative statements (Ex: Watch out! The car is coming!)
3. PRESENT PERFECT
I. PRESENT TENSES

 FORM:

 S + have/has + V3/V-ed (Ex: I have bought a new bicycle.)

 S + have/has + not + V3/V-ed (Ex: The train hasn’t come.)

 Have/Has + S + V3/V-ed (Ex: Have you ever seen falling stars?)


3. PRESENT PERFECT
I. PRESENT TENSES

 USAGE: Present perfect is used when we talk about:

 Recently completed actions (Ex: I have just finished my homework.)

 Actions that have repeated many times in the past and may continue to happen in the
future (Ex: She has visited Korea several times.)

 Actions starting in the past and lasting until present (Ex: They have worked here for 10
years.)

 Actions that happened and finished in the past but their results still exist at present
(Ex: He has broken his leg, so he can’t play football any more.)

 Actions that happened and finished in the past but the exact time is unknown (Ex: The
kitty has left my house.)
3. PRESENT PERFECT
I. PRESENT TENSES

 SIGNS:

 Just/recently/lately (Ex: She has quited her job recently.)

 Never, ever (Ex: I have never travelled by airplane.)

 Yet (Ex: Have you had breakfast yet?)

 For + a period of time (Ex: I have lived in this city for 3 years.)

 Since + a point of time (Ex: I have live in this city since 3 years ago.)

 So far/until now/up to now/up to present (Ex: So far, they have done


many experiments to find out the new material.)
4. PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS
I. PRESENT TENSES

 FORM: have/has + been + V-ing

 USAGE: Present perfect continuous is used when we talked


about:
 Actions starting in the past and lasting continuously until present. (Ex:
They have been waiting for the flight for 6 hours.)

INTERROGATIVE

 USAGE: Simple past is used when we talk about:

 Actions happening and totally finishing in the past with specific time.

 SIGNS:

 … ago (Ex: I met him for the first time 3 years ago.)

 Yesterday

 Last week/month/year

 FORM: was/were + V-ing

 USAGE: Simple past is used when we talk about:

 Actions happening and lasting for a period of time in the past (Ex: Yesterday
I was studying at the library from 2p.m to 6p.m.)

 Actions happening in the past but interrupted by another action. (Ex: When I
came home last night, my dog was sleeping.)

 Actions happening at the same time in the past (Ex: Last evening, while I was
watching TV my sister was cooking dinner.
3. PAST PERFECT
II. PAST TENSES

 FORM: had + V3/V-ed

 USAGE: Past perfect is used when we talk about:

 Actions happening before a point of time or another action in the past

 I had lived in USA before 2018.

 I had gone to the market before I went to school this morning.

 After all the guests had left, I started to clean the house.
4. PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
II. PAST TENSES

 FORM: had been + V-ing

 USAGE: Past perfect continuous is used when we talk about:

 Actions happening and lasting continuously until a point of time or another


action in the past

 Before 2018 I had been living in USA for 10 years.

 I had been sleeping during 12 hours until mom woke me up.

III. FUTURE TENSES

 FORM: will + V-inf (I, We + shall + V-inf)

 Will not = won’t Shall not = shan’t

 USAGE: Simple future is used when we talk about:

 Actions happening in the future (Ex: I will/shall go to the university next


year.)

 Actions decided at the time of speaking (Ex: We’re late. The bus has left.
We will/shall catch a taxi.)

 FORM: be going to + V-inf

 USAGE: Near future is used when we talk about:

 Actions planned to happen in near future (Ex: I’m going to travel to Thailand
next week.)

 Level of reliability:

 Simple present > Present continuous > Near future > Simple future.

 FORM: will/shall be + V-ing

 USAGE: Future continuous is used when we talk about:

 Actions happening in a continuous period of time in the future (Ex: I will be


working all day this weekend.)

 Actions happening at a point of time in the future (Ex: This time tomorrow I
will be studying in the library.)
4. FUTURE PERFECT
III. FUTURE TENSES

 FORM: will/shall have + V3/V-ed

 USAGE: Future perfect is used when we talk about:

 Actions happening before a point of time or another action in the future

 I will have finished my work by tomorrow.

 Before you come home this evening, I will have done the cooking.

 SIGNS:

 By + a point of time, by then, by that time

 By the time/Before/When + simple present


5. FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS
III. FUTURE TENSES

 FORM: will/shall have been + V-ing

 USAGE: Future perfect continuous is used when we talk about:

 Actions starting in the past and lasting continuously until a point of time or
another action in the future.

 By 2018, I will have been living in this city for 20 years.

 Before I take the test, I will have been studying for 12 hours.
