INVERSE

VARIATION
PREPARED BY: JENALINE T. ROLLAN
Opening Prayer
REVIEW!
Direct Variation is a situation which produces pairs
of numbers such that when one increases, the other
also increases.
The statements
“y varies directly as x”
“y is directly proportional to x” and
“y is proportional to x”
may be translated mathematically as ,
where is the constant of variation.
Inverse
Variation
OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, you
are expected to

• Define accurately inverse variation

• Solves problems involving inverse variation
through a group activity
• Relate the concept of inverse variation to
one’s life through recitation
Inverse variation
Is a relationship between two
variables such that if one variable
increases, the other decreases.
In an inverse variation, the product of the
two variables is constant. In general, if “
varies inversely as ” or is inversely
proportional to ,
or ,
Where is the constant of variation.
Example 1.
If varies inversely as and when , find
when ?
Solution: 12
𝑘 𝑦=
𝑦= 𝑥
𝑥 12
𝑦=
𝑘 9
4=
3 4
𝑦=
𝑘=12 3
Example 2.
If varies inversely as and when , find
when ?
Solution:
20
𝑥=
𝑦
5

𝑦 =4
Example 3.
The number of days it takes to finish a job is
inversely proportional to the number of workers.
If eight men can finish a job in 15 days, in how
many days can 12 men finish the same job?
Solution: 𝑑=
120
𝑚
120
𝑑=
12
𝑑= 10
12 men can finish the job
in 10 days.
Group Activity:
One Minute Challenge: Finding the Value of Y edition
• Six questions will be given to be answered by group.
• Each group will start answering only after reading the
questions twice.
• Each question must be answered within one minute.
• The group will write only their final answer on their
illustration board.
• Once the time is up, each group will raise their answer
for checking.
• Each correct answer is worth 5 points.
1. If y varies inversely as x and
y=10 when x=5, find y when
x=25.

Answer: y = 2
2. If y is inversely proportional
to x, and y=50 when x=10, what
is the value of y when x=20?

Answer: y = 25
3. If x varies inversely as y and
x=3 when y=4, find y when x=6.

Answer: y = 2
4. If y varies inversely as x and
y=10 when x=5, what is the
value of y when x=15?

Answer: y =10/3
5. If y varies inversely as x and
y=10 when x=5, find y when
x=7.

Answer: y = 50/7
6. The number of days in repairing a
house varies inversely as the number of
men working . It takes 15 days for 2 men
to repair the house. How many men are
needed to complete the job in 6 days?

Answer: y = 5
I. Write an equation for each statements:
1. The speed of a moving object is inversely proportional to the time
travelled.
2. The number of pechay plants in a row varies inversely as the space
between them.
3. The acceleration of a car is inversely proportional to its mass .
4. The length of a rectangular field varies inversely as its width .
5. The density of air varies inversely as the volume of water in the
atmosphere.
II. Solve the following problems. Show your solution. (5 pts. each)
1. If y varies inversely as x and y=12 when x=5, find the constant of
variation.
2. If y is inversely proportional to x and y=18 when x=3, find the
constant of variation.
3. If it takes 8 hours for 2 carabaos to plow a field, how many hours
will it take 4 carabaos to do the same job?
Assignment:
Find the constant of variation and
write the equation representing the
relationship between the quantities:
