Measures of Position
A measure of position is a method by which
the position that a particular data value has
within a given data set can be identified. It is
used to describe the standing or location of
an observation relative to the rest of the data.
The most commonly used measures of
position are quartiles, deciles and percentiles.

are measures that divide an arranged data
(smallest to largest) into 4 equal parts.

EXAMPLE 1
The number of nuclear power plants in the top 15
nuclear power-producing countries in the world are
listed. Find the first, second, and third quartiles of the

Interpretation About one-quarter of the countries have 9 or
fewer nuclear power plants; about one-half have 16 or
fewer; and about three-quarters have 33 or fewer.

INTERQUARTILE RANGE
The interquartile range (IQR) is the difference
between the third and first quartiles.
