Educational experience

of Jose Rizal

Rizal had his early education in Calamba and
Binan

• it was a typical schooling that a son of an


ilustrado family received during his time.

• instructions at that time was rigid and strict.

• It may be said that Rizal who was born a physical


weakling, rose to become an intellectual giant.
THE HERO'S FIRST TEACHER

•The first teacher of Rizal was his mother.


• At the age of three he learned the alphabet and
the prayers.
• As Jose grew older, his parents employed
private tutors to him lessons at home.
- The first was Maestro
- Second was Maestro Lucas Padua
- and, an old man named Leon Monroy (He
was a former classmates of his father but five
months later he died)
JOSE GOES TO BINAN

• June 1896, Jose after kissing the hands of his parents and
tearful parting with his sisters left Calamba for Binan.
• They rode in a carromata, reaching their destination after a
one and a half hour drive.
• Jose, with his cousin named Leandro, went sight seeing in
the town.
• Instead of enjoying he started to experience homesickness,
to which he recounted

"I remember my home town, my idolized mother and my


solicitous sisters. Ah, how sweet to me was Calamba, my
own town, in spite of the fact, that was not as wealthy as
Binan.”
FIRST DAY IN BINAN SCHOOL

• On a monday Paciano brought his younger brother


to the school of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz.

• Paciano knew the teacher well because he had been


a pupil under him before.

• Jose described his teacher in Binan in his memoir


as tall, thin, long-necked, with a sharp nose and a
body slightly bent forward and he used to wear a
sinamay shirt that was woven by the skillful women
of Binan
FIRST SCHOOL BRAWL

• In the afternoon of his first day in school, when the


teacher was having his siesta, Jose met the bully Pedro.

• Jose challenged him to a fight, to which Pedro agreed for


he thought he could beat Jose because of his small size, but
Pedro failed as Jose won against him.

• A classmate named Andres Salandanan challenged him to


an arm wrestling match.

• In succeeding days he had other fights with the boys of


Binan.
PAINTING LESSONS IN BINAN

• Near the school was the house of an old painter, called


Juancho who was also the father-in-law of the school
teacher.

• Old Juancho Freely gave him lessons in drawing and


painting.

• Jose and his classmate Jose Guevara who also loved


painting became the old man's apprentice.

• In due time they became "the favourite painters of the


class."
DAILY LIFE IN BINAN

• Jose led a methodical life in Binan, almost


spartan in simplicity.

• Such life contributed much in his


development, it strengthened his body and soul.
BEST STUDENT IN SCHOOL

• In academic studies, Jose beat all Binan boys. He


surpassed them all in Spanish, Latin, and other
subjects.

• Some of his older classmates were jealous of his


intellectual superiority.

• consequently the teacher had to punish Jose. In


which he said that; " In spite of the reputation I had
of being a good boy, the day was unusual when I was
not laid out on a bench and given five or six blows"
END OF BINAN SCHOOLING

• Before Christmas season in 1870, Jose received a


letter from his sister Saturnina, informing him of the
arrival of the steamer Talim which would take him
from Binan to Calamba.

• He prayed, collected pebbles as a souvenir, and


bid farewell to his teachers and classmates.

• He left Binan in the afternoon, December 17,


1870, after a year of schooling in the town.
MARTYRDOM OF GOMBURZA

• On the night of January 20, 1872 the Cavite Mutiny


happened, under the leadership of Lamadrid.

• But was suppressed and they magnified the failed


mutiny as revolt.

• The Spanish authorities arrested padre Gomes,


Burgos, and Zamora. Accordingly despite the
Archbishops plea for clemency because of their
innocence, were still executed at sunrise om February
17, 1872 by the order of Governor General Izquierdo.
MARTYRDOM OF GOMBURZA

•Paciano was enraged for the death of his Friend padre


Burgos. That is why he quit his studies and returned to
Calamba to tell the heroic story of his friend to Jose.

• The martyrdom of the GOMBURZA in 1872


inspired Rizal to fight the evil of the spanish tyrannu
and reedem his oppressed people.

• He dedicated his second novel, El filibusterismo to


the GOMBURZA.
