INVENTION OF BENZENE

Benzene was first isolated by faraday(1825) from cylinders of

compressed illuminating gas obtained from natural sources.
In 1845, benzene was found in coal tar by Hofmann
Aromatic compounds are benzene and compounds that resemble
benzene in chemical behaviour.
Benzene has been known since 1825; its chemical and physical
properties are perhaps better known than those of any other single
organic compound. In spite of this, no satisfactory structure for
benzene had been advanced until about 193.
STRUCTURE OF BENZENE

Kekulé's Structure

Friedrich August Kekulé was a German organic chemist.

He was the principal founder of the theory of chemical
structure and in particular the Kekulé structure of benzene.
In 1858, August Kekule (of the University of Bonn) had
proposed that carbon atoms can join to one another to form
chains. Then, in 1865, he offered an answer to the question
of benzene: these carbon chains can. sometimes be closed ,to
form rings.

PROPERTIES OF BENZENE

1. Benzene is a colorless compound, and the physical

state of Benzene is liquid.
2. Benzene melts at 5.5 °C, and it boils at 80.1 °C.
3. Benzene is not miscible in water and is soluble in
organic solvents.
4. It has an aromatic odor.
5. The density of Benzene is 0.87 gm/cm³ and is
lighter than water.
6. Benzene exhibits resonance.
7. It is inflammable, and its combustion produces
sooty flames.
