Biosynthesis of Terpenes

The carbon skeletons of these compounds can be derived by the commonly accepted
scheme for the biogenesis of terpenoids which involves the initial formation of
geranyl pyrophosphate from mevalonic acid pyrophosphate, by way of concerted
dehydration-decarboxylation to isopentenyl pyrophosphate

1
Enzymatic isomerization of isopentenyl pyrophosphate to dimethylallyl pyrophosphate
is followed by nucleophilic displacement of the pyrophosphate group of the latter by
means of a second molecule of isopentenyl pyrophosphate

Add. of H+ elimination of a proton

RULE - isopentenyl pyrophosphate and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate are the C 5 building blocks for the
biosynthesis of terpenes

Proton expulsion then leads to geranyl pyrophosplate, the precursor of the monolerpenes .
