SIMPLE PAST TENSE

The Form
• Add -ed:
a) If a verb of one syllable ends [consonant-vowel-
consonant], double the final consonant and add -ed
chat > chatted
stop > stopped
prefer > preferred
Regular Verbs incur > incurred
b) If the final consonant is w, x, or y, don't double it
sew > sewed
play > played
enter > entered
open > opened
• Add -d if the root form ends in an e :
type > typed
improve > improved
love > loved
guzzle > guzzled
Regular Verbs
• For verbs ending with -y, change the y to i and add -ed:
cry > cried
study > studied
try > tried
fry > fried
• Different spelling, different pronunciation:
see > saw
find > found
catch > caught
understand > understood
• Same spelling, different pronunciation:
Irregular Verbs
read > read
• Same spelling, same pronunciation:
cost > cost
put > put
hit > hit
cut > cut
The Negative Form

did not + [root form of verb].


Examples:
 Riana did not play badminton yesterday.
 Those children did not join the camp last summer.

• For the verb to be;


a) when the subject of the sentence is singular, use was not or wasn’t.
Example: The fourth-place winner was not happy at all.
b) when the subject is plural, use were not or weren’t.
Example: The contestants were not ready to leave the hall.
The Question Form

• When asking a question in the simple past tense; did + [subject] + [root form of verb]
• Examples:
 Did Pandelela win the gold medal or the silver medal?
 Where did the champion go to celebrate?
 Did the judges decide fairly, in your opinion?

• When asking a question with the verb to be; was/were + [subject]


 Was the chef in a good mood after the session?
 Were people taking lots of pictures?
The Use
#1 Completed Action in the Past

• To express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past / something that
happened once in the past.
• Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time
in mind.
• Examples:
 I saw a movie yesterday.
 I didn't see a play yesterday.
 Last year, I traveled to Japan.
 Did you have dinner last night?
 I met my wife in 1983.
#2 A Series of Completed Actions

• These actions happen 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on.


• Examples:
 I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
 He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00.
 Did you add flour, pour in the milk, and then add the eggs?
#3 Duration in the Past

• Can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past.
• A duration is a longer action often indicated by expressions such as for two years, for five minutes, all
day, all year, etc.
• Examples:
 I lived in Brazil for two years.
 Shauna studied Japanese for five years.
 They sat at the beach all day.
 They did not stay at the party the entire time.
 We talked on the phone for thirty minutes.
 A: How long did you wait for them?
B: We waited for one hour.
#4 Habits in the Past

• Something that happened several times in the past.


• To make it clear that we are talking about a habit, we often add expressions such as always, often,
usually, never, when I was a child, when I was younger, etc..
• Examples:
 I studied French when I was a child.
 They always enjoyed visiting their friends.
 He didn't play the piano.
 Did you play a musical instrument when you were a kid?
 We swam a lot while we were on holiday.
 They never went to school, they always skipped class.
#5 Past Facts or Generalizations

• To describe past facts or generalizations which are no longer true.


• This use of the simple past is quite similar to the expression used to.
• Examples:
 She was shy as a child, but now she is very outgoing.
 He didn't like tomatoes before.
 Did you live in Texas when you were a kid?
 People paid much more to make cell phone calls in the past.
Tips
Adverb Placement

• The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as always, only,
never, ever, still, just, etc.
• Examples:
 You just called my wife.
 Did you just call my wife?
Active / Passive

• Examples:
 Tom repaired the car. (Active)
 The car was repaired by Tom. (Passive)
