Course Objective
Upon finishing this book,
students will be able to
“understand and use a few
simple Chinese words and
sentences to meet their
specific needs in
communication and to
prepare themselves for further
learning
Specific Objectives

• Upon completion of this course, students will be able to :


1. Master Chinese pinyin, the official phonetic symbol system for
marking the pronunciation of Chinese characters;
2. Comprehend the basic spoken and written standard Chinese
known as mandarin under the most common social settings,
such as traveling, doing shopping, asking about the time,
talking about the weather, Spring festival etc.
Specific Objectives

• Upon completion of this course, students will be able to :


3. Read and comprehend at least 300 Chinese words;
4. Write more than 100 Chinse Characters;
5. Be familiar with certain common aspects of Chinese Culture
such as Chinese festivals, basic Chinese social etiquette and
Chinese social customs.

Requirements for Students of CHIN 104

 Attend and make the best use of your class hours (Please come to
classroom 5 min before the due time. Leaves can only be granted in
advance by the instructor for special reason such as illness).
 Preview the vocabulary and the texts of each new unit
• Read and recognized the new words in each unit;

• Do “Warm-up” exercise1 & 2;

• Try to read and understand the new texts in each unit by yourself

before we study them in classroom


 Do every assignment devotedly in strict accordance with the teacher’s
requirement.

Special Rules on Discipline:

 Be sure to attend class 5 min before 7:00 PM. Being late for class or leaving class early is
not tolerated.
 If you are caught being late for class or leaving class without asking for permission for
three times or more, you will receive a Final Grade no higher than “C”, whatever the other
components amount to.
 If you are caught absent without being granted permission for three times or more, you will
not receive a Final Grade higher than “C”, whatever the other components amount to.
