Material Properties

Group No. 4
What is a Material?
Material is a substance or
mixture of substances that
constitutes an object. Materials
can be pure or impure, living or
non-living matter. Materials can
be classified on the basis of their
physical and chemical properties,
or on their geological origin or
biological function. Materials
science is the study of materials,
their properties and their
applications.
Material Properties

The material properties help in the identification of a substance

and can be: physical, functional, chemical and organoleptic. In
general, the properties of matter are divided into two groups:

1. General properties of material

2. Specific properties of material
General properties of material
They are the characteristics that all matter presents, regardless
of its physical state (solid, liquid or gaseous).

• Inertia
• Mass
• Volume
• Impenetrability
• Compressibility
• Elasticity
• Divisibility
Specific Properties of Material

Unlike general properties, • Organoleptic

specific properties are unique properties
characteristics of a given • Chemical properties
matter. These characteristics
uniquely specify and identify • Physical properties
some materials, • Functinal properties
differentiating them from
others.
Organoleptic properties
• Odor
• Flavor
• Color
• Brightness
• Texture
• sound
Chemical properties

Fuel
Oxidant
Corrosive
Explosive
Effervescence
Fermentation
Physical properties
• Melting point
• Boiling point
• Density
• Solubility
• Electrical conductivity
• Malleability
• Ductility
• Hardeness

• Acids
• Bases
• Salts
