IRRIGATE, SUCTION AND

SPONGE THE
OPERATIVE SITE
Assigned by
Mam Madeeha
 Washing out an organ (such as the stomach or colon), a body
cavity, or a wound by flushing it with a fluid. Also called
lavage.

 What is irrigation in surgery?

IRRIGATION  Wound irrigation (i.e. washing out a wound before wound
closure) aims to reduce the microbial burden by removing
tissue debris, metabolic waste, and tissue exudate from the
surgical field before site closure.
Provide easy access to the wound….

Remove dressing.

STEPS OF Irrigate the wound with the right equipment and pressure.

WOUND Let the liquid flow from the cleanest to the dirtiest area.

IRRIGATION Cover open areas with a sterile bandage or towels.

Debridement.
 Redress the wound, put a bandage on it if necessary.
 The patient is under general anesthesia during irrigation &
WHAT IS debridement.
IRRIGATION  Irrigation involves using a syringe, a pressure canister, or a
AFTER sprayer to deliver a solution to the wound.

SURGERY  The solution, which is typically normal saline, is delivered to

flush debris out of the wound.
 An irrigation tube is used during surgical
INSTRUMEN procedures for irrigation and suction

T USED FOR purposes.

IRRIGATION  It keeps the surgical site clean and easy to

explore.
IN SURGERY  These irrigation tubes are lightweight,
reliable, and rustproof.
 Suctioning is a procedure that removes excess secretions from
the mouth and throat (oropharynx). From the nose and throat
SUCTION (nasopharnyx),
 and from the windpipe (trachea) using a mechanical aspiration
device (Suction machine).
 There are two types of suctioning, which names are following:
DIFFERENT  Open Tracheal Suctioning System
TYPES OF  Closed Tracheal Suctioning System
SUCTIONING  Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal
Also called OTSS.
OPEN In open suctioning, the patient is disconnected from the
TRACHEAL  ventilator and a single-use suction catheter is inserted into
SUCTIONING the endotracheal tube

SYSTEM
 Also called CTSS.
 Closed suctioning allows a suction catheter to be inserted into the
endotracheal tube through a one-way valve, with no need to
CLOSED disconnect the patient from the ventilator.

TRACHEAL
SUCTIONING
SYSTEM
Place towel or water proof pad across the patient chest

Apply gloves

Connect the suction catheter to suction tubing connected with suction

device
OROPHARYNG Turn on the suction
EAL & Remove oxygen device
NASOPHARYN Insert catheter to mouth or nasal cavity move catheter in cavity until
GEAL suction are cleared

Replace the mask or oxygen device

 Rinse the catheter with water until the secretion is cleared from
suction tubing.
 A surgical sponge was defined as cotton material (e.g.
SPONGE laparotomy sponge, raytec, cottonoid, towel, and kerlix)

THE inserted during an invasive procedure to absorb fluids or isolate

tissue,
OPERATIVE  with the intention of removing the absorbent material prior to
SITE completion of the procedure.
 Surgical sponges can be used for several purposes during
surgery: hemostasis, protection, retraction, blunt dissection, and
USE OF wound management.

SPONGE IN  What is surgical sponge materials?

OPERATIVE  The sponge most commonly used today is a cellulose
SITE derived pad that may be of woven cotton, nonwoven
cellulose or a felt made of rayon.
 Gauze sponges are disposable medical supplies commonly used
in medicine and surgery.
PURPOSE OF  They are ordinarily made of gauze and are used to absorb blood
SPONGE and other fluids as well as clean wounds.
 When used in surgery, they are called surgical sponges.
