Aim: To study the action of heat on given salt

• ZnCO3

• Pb(NO3)2

• Iodine
Apparatus: ZnCO3; Pb(NO3)2, Iodine test tube, test tube holder, Bunsen
Burner.
1. Substance, Products, Observation, Deduction

• Substance:- Zinc carbonate – ZnCO3

• Products:- ZnO + CO2 [g]

• Observation:- 1. Original colour- White

2. Colour changes- Turns yellow on heating

3. Gas evolved- Carbon dioxide. A]colour & odour- colourless & odourless

B]Nature- Slightly acidic to litmus

C]Test- Lime water turns milky.

4. Residue- Zinc oxide formed.

Deduction-The white powder is zinc carbonate.

2. Substance, Products, Observation, Deduction
• Substance- 2Pb(NO3)2.

• Products- 2pbO+4NO2+O2.

• Observation- 1.Original colour- 1.White crystalline solid.

2.Colour change- Turns yellow on heating, decrepitates and melts.

3.Gas evolved- [Water vapour] NO2 & O2

Nitrogen dioxide- reddish brown, acidic to litmus, turns acidified ferrous sulphate solution brown.

Oxygen- colourless, neutral.

4.Residue- Litharge is formed on strong heating which fuses with the glass.

• Deduction- The white powder is lead nitrate.

3. Substance, Products, Observation, Deduction

• Substance- I2 (s) [Iodine-solid]

• Products- 2I (vapour) [Iodine-vapour]

Observation- 1. Original colour- White crystalline

2.On heat-Sublimes on heating, evolving a basic [NH3] and [HCl] gas

which on cooling combines to form ammonium chloride .

3.Residue- No recidue is left in the test tube.

• Deduction- The white powder is ammonium chloride.
