Introduction

 Definition of alkylation: Alkylation is a chemical process that involves the addition

alkyl group (a hydrocarbon chain) to a molecule or compound.
 Importance of alkylation: Alkylation is widely used in the chemical industry to cre
compounds with improved properties or to modify existing molecules for various
applications

Alkylation of benzene

 The alkylation of benzene is a fundamental reaction in organic chemistry.

 Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene: Benzene reacts with an alkyl halide in the pre
of a Lewis acid catalyst (such as aluminum chloride) to form alkylbenzene.
 Limitations: Friedel-Crafts alkylation has limitations, including the tendency of alk
groups to rearrange, leading to the formation of multiple products. This can be con
by using bulky alkylating agents or by employing other alkylation methods.
Application in chemical industry

In industrial processes, alkylation is often used in the petroleum industry to produce hi

octane gasoline.
One of the most well-known alkylation processes is the reaction between isobutane (C
and olefins (such as propylene or butylene) to produce alkylate, which is a mixture of
branched-chain hydrocarbons.
Alkylate has excellent anti-knock properties and is blended with gasoline to increase i
octane rating and improve engine performance.
Alkylation in petroleum industry

 Feedstock Preparation:
 The first step is to prepare the feedstocks. The olefin feedstock, usually propylene
butylene, is obtained from the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit or other refinery
processes.
 Acid Catalyst:
The alkylation process requires the presence of a strong acid catalyst to facilitate the
reaction. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or hydrofluoric acid (HF) are commonly used as catal
 Mixing and Reactor:
The olefin and isoparaffin feedstocks are mixed together and then introduced into a rea
vessel. The acid catalyst is also added to the reactor.
 Alkylation Reaction:
In the reactor, the olefin and isoparaffin undergo an alkylation reaction in the presence
acid catalyst. The double bond in the olefin is broken, and the resulting carbocation rea
with the isoparaffin, forming a branched-chain alkylate product.
 Separation and Treating:
After the reaction, the mixture of alkylate, unreacted olefin, isoparaffin, and acid cata
sent to a separation unit. The alkylate is separated from the unreacted feedstocks and c
 Acid Regeneration:
The separated acid catalyst, which may contain impurities and water, is sent to an acid
regeneration unit. In this unit, the acid is treated to remove impurities and water, restor
activity.

 Pharmaceutical synthesis:
The alkylation process is a chemical process used in the petroleum refining industry to
produce high-octane gasoline components.
It involves the reaction of an olefin, typically propylene or butylene, with an isoparaff
usually isobutane, to form branched-chain hydrocarbons called alkylate.

 Polymerization:
Alkylation is used in the production of polymers, such as polyethylene and polypropyl
modify their physical and chemical properties.
 Alkylation can be performed during the polymerization process by using monomer
contain alkyl groups or by post-polymerization modification of the polymer
Limitations and challenges

 Side reactions and selectivity: Alkylation reactions may produce undesired side pro
or exhibit low selectivity, leading to complex reaction mixtures.Environmental
considerations: Some alkylating agents or catalysts used in alkylation processes ma
environmental and safety concerns.Process
