Triangle

• A triangle is a figure
formed by three
segments joining
three noncollinear
points.
Vertex
• A vertex of a triangle
is a point that joins
two sides of the
triangle.
• The side across from
an angle is the
opposite side.
Classifying Triangles by Sides
• Equilateral Triangle
• Isosceles Triangle
• Scalene Triangle
Equilateral Triangle
• An equilateral
triangle has three
congruent sides.
Isosceles Triangle
• An isosceles
triangle has at least
two congruent sides.
Scalene Triangle
• A scalene triangle
has no congruent
sides.
Classify the triangle by its sides.
Classification of Triangles by
Angles
• Equiangular triangle
• Acute triangle
• Right triangle
• Obtuse triangle
Equiangular Triangle
• An equiangular
triangle has three
congruent angles.
Acute Triangle
• An acute triangle
has three acute
angles.
Right Triangle
• A right triangle has
one right angle.
Obtuse Triangle
• An obtuse triangle
has one obtuse angle
Classify the triangle by its angles.
Triangle Sum Theorem
• The sum of the measures of the angles of a
triangle is 180º.
• In ΔABC, mA + m B + m C = 180º
Find the measure of the missing angle.
Corollary to the Triangle Sum
Theorem
• The acute angles of a
right triangle are A
complementary.
• In ΔABC, if m  C =
90º, then
m  A + m B= 90º

B
C
ΔABC is a right triangle. Find the
measure of angle A.
Interior Angles
• When the sides of a
triangle are extended,
other angles are
formed.
• The three original
angles are the
interior angles.
Exterior Angles
• The angles that are
adjacent to the
interior angles are the
exterior angles.
• It is common to show
only one exterior
angle at a vertex.
Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem
• The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is greater
than the measure of either of the nonadjacent (remote)
interior angles.
• The measure of an exterior angle is the sum of the
remote interior angles.
Example What relationships do
we know about the
6
2 angles listed?

1 3 4
5
∠5 > ∠2 ∠5 > ∠3 ∠5 = ∠2 + ∠3
∠4 > ∠1 ∠4 > ∠2 ∠4 = ∠1 + ∠2
∠6 > ∠1 ∠6 > ∠3 ∠6 = ∠1 + ∠3
Find the measure of angle 1.
What do you know about x?

65° 3x – 5 > 53 3x – 5 > 65

3x – 5 = 53 + 65
53° 3 (3x – 5)° 3x – 5 = 118
+ 5 = +5
3x = 123
x = 41
Can these three sides form a
triangle?

A. 5, 8, 16

B. 6, 11, 14

C. 8, 13, 5
Triangle Inequality Theorem
• The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle
is greater than the length of the third side.

– If the 3rd side is equal to or less than the sum of the 2 other
sides, then it cannot form a triangle.

AB + BC > AC

BC + AC > AB

AB + AC > BC

A. 5, 8, 16 5 + 8 < 16 NO

B. 6, 11, 14 YES

C. 8, 13, 5 5 + 8 = 13 NO

Given two sides of a triangle, what
is the value(s) of the third side?
• 6, 10, _______
4 < x < 16
6+10 > x 6+x > 10 10+x > 6
16 > x x > 10-6 x > 6-10
x < 16 x>4 x > -4
