Parts of young a bone
The long bone has three parts, the two ends
and a shaft.
(1) EPIPHYSIS
The ends and tips of a bone that ossify from
secondary centers. These are the expanded
ends of each long bone. These are
Pressure epiphysis; takes part in weight
transmission.
Tarction epiphysis; does not takes part in weight
transmission.
(2) DIAPHYSIS
Also known as shaft of the bone.
It ossify from the primary center. It is a tubular structure
(3) METAPHYSIS
It is the part present adjacent to the
epiphyseal cartilage. It is present between the
diaphysis and epiphysis. It is a zone of active
growth.
(4) EPIPHYSEAL CARTILAGE
It’s a cartilage present between diaphysis
and epiphysis. It separates diaphysis from
epiphysis.
Blood supply of long bones
• The following arteries supply the long bones.
(1) Nutrient artery
• It enters the shaft through the nutrient foramen,
runs obliquely and through the cortex and divides
into ascending and descending branches in the
medullary cavity.
• 2)Periosteal arteries
These are numerous branches at the muscular and
ligamentous attachments. The enters beneath the
periosteum and supply 1/3 of the cortex.
•
(3) Epiphysial arteries
These arteries supply the epiphysis of the long bones.
•
(4) Metaphysial arteries
These are derieved from the neighbouring systemic
vessels. The pass directly into the metaphysis
