Background of the company

United steel and metal industry (USMI) is located in Mekelle city in place known as Elala (Lachi) Keble, Semen sub-city on

a total area of 60,000 square meters. It established in 2007 G.C within a capital of 43 million birr and investment of 260

million by local investors with the objective of producing structural and furniture hollow section metal products.

Objective

• To distribute industries and technologies in all regions of Ethiopia.

• To avoid importing and to bring the laser technology, industrial knowledge and apply in our country by training our human

resource.

Mission

 To supply competitive hollow section tubes, LTZ and sheet metal in different size to its customers, maximize owners wealth

and imparting training skills and human resource development of the factory

 To satisfy the community demand by manufacturing different reliable steel and metal products with greater quality, needed

size time and place over the entire country.

 By establishing mutually supporting industries that manufactures different products through hot and cold forming process to

make the investors and the country advantageous.

Design of screw type bearing puller Machine

Background
Bearing puller is a device used to extract bearings from shafts and other
components in safe and effective way.

Problem statement:
 In the factory I observed that the way of bearing changing and removal
in steel forming and sizing section of the factory is just with the use of
impact forcing method applied through hammering mechanism.
This is done with traditional bearing removal and installation acted by
hammering which causes several problems on the bearing.
The excessive hammering causes damage of bearing surfaces and
sometimes chance to failure at early stage of its service life.
Objectives
General objective
The general objective of the project is to Design, analysis and detail drawing bearing puller machine
to reduce damage on the bearing and enhance working life which improves overall economy of the
company.

Motivation
 The reason I want to solve this problem is while I was observing the factory I
had seen the problem and the workers in section are wasting their time to pull or to
dismount the bearing and
 it is unsafe method to extract or to pull the bearing which resulted injuries and
this initiated me to solve the problem.
 Beside this I observed many bearings in the maintenance room to be checked
due to their low performance.
Significance of the project
Design of screw bearing puller machine for United Steel and Metal Industry gives the following
advantages,
 To reduce time wastage, cost and foreign currency.
 Provide safe method of bearing removal and preferable for tight budget.
 Ensure safe operation of milling machine in forming and sizing the profile.
 To avoid the extra activity and to avoid hand injury that caused to the mechanic worker.
Scope and limitation of the project
The scope of this project is to design, analysis and cost estimation
of a screw based bearing puller machine using CATIA. The non
conventionally shaped linkage hook is analyzed by means of Finite
Element Method on ANSYS Software. The project is related to and
based on the company problems in the main section of steel milling.
The project does not analyze external factors that affect the
company.
 limitation of the project is that the puller is suitable only for light
duty machinery not for heavy duty which require hydraulic puller.

Concept Development
 Development process demands the coordination among functions of the integrative
development methods.
 Specifications provide a precise description of what a product has to do. It is the
translation of the customer needs into technical. The goal of concept generation is to
thoroughly explore the space of the product concepts that may address the united steel and
metal industry needs.
 Concept selection is the activity in which the generated concepts are analyzed and
sequentially developed to identify the most promising concept.

Design and analysis

An investigation of the design requirement preceded the selection of
materials for the project. The major design considerations were;
 High yield Strength, low mass,

 Resistance to abrasive wear,


 Resistance to buckling, availability,

 Low cost and ease of manufacture.

Material selection was based on their characteristics, properties and suitability


for the operational condition.

• Screw shaft is machine element used to lower and raise a
given load by rotational movement about its axis. Here it
converts rotational motion to translational to extract the
bearing.

It is a mechanical device which transmits the motion of screw
to the linkage arm in extracting the bearing. Since the relative
motion causes friction softer material is selected.

The linkage or arm
The linkage is structure which supports the bearing by means of
hook in bearing extraction process. Since it has non
conventional shapes it is analyzed by means of Finite Element
Method.

the linkage arm to access the bearings with the

Bolt and nut: commercially available M15*2 bolt
and its nut are specified to connect the connecting
plate with the collar and the plate with the linkage or
arm part.
Working principle
 The working principle in this machine based mainly on the
screw mechanism, Which changes rotational motion into
translational motion.
 The translational motion of the linkage through the collar
extracts the bearing with opposite motion to the screw
translation.
 The bolts used to loosen and tighten the plate to adjust
flexibility of the puller for different diameter bearing
extraction.

Conclusion
 After this the bearing puller comes true in manufacturing or practical
manner it will solve a very big problem for the company.
 It is concluded that there is a transformation from traditional bearing
removal activity toward modern and efficient bearing withdrawal
technique which has the following important advantages
 Increasing the life time of the ball bearing
 Creating a comfortable working condition for the factory

 Production rate of the company is enhanced due to large number of bearing


removal in a short period of time.
Recommendation
• The limitation of this project is the machine only pulls bearing by
holding on their surface which means bearings inside a system which
have to be pulled by internal puller machine couldn’t get access.
• Further investigation of multipurpose bearing puller is required to pull
the bearing internally as well as externally.
• Beside this the developed design has a limitation for heavy-duty
machinery in which the use of hydraulic bearing puller is
recommended.
