Power monitoring with SENTRON components
Transparency for energy flows – saving resources

Electricity, water, or gas:

In the face of rising prices and heightened sensitivity
to environmental issues, energy is becoming an
increasingly valuable resource. Energy management
systems allow companies to save up to 20 percent of
energy costs.

The TÜV-certified hardware and software

components from the SENTRON portfolio make
energy flows transparent, and create the perfect
technical basis for a company-internal energy
management system with full ISO 50001
compliance.

Harmonics

• Harmonics are caused by non-linear loads, e.g. byswitched-mode power supplies, fluorescent lamps, frequency
converters or arc furnaces
• As a rule, only odd-numbered harmonics occur. The existence of significant even-numbered harmonics indicates
abnormal conditions.

Communication target groups

The main target group comprises existing power monitoring customers in industry. Here, engineering technologists should be addressed. First, network problems
have already been encountered in own production because of external or internal interferences. Second, the power quality is an important criterion for
the proper function of the product (or of the plant) with their customers. Switchgear engineers, energy consultants and management can be addressed
with similar arguments.

Communication objective

The market launch of the 7KM PAC5100/5200 measuring devices is primarily aimed at existing power monitoring customers who already
operate a power monitoring system using the 7KT and 7KM PAC measuring devices as well as the powermanager power monitoring
software. With due regard of the defined target groups, the aim here is to convince these existing customers of the advantages offered by
power quality analysis.
For example, a machine manufacturer/plant constructor may see their customers overseas confronted by a different/lower power quality
than in the plant’s country of manufacture. The measuring devices allows them to check whether the required power quality actually
reaches at the plant.
The 7KM PAC 5100/5200 measuring devices therefore present not only the energy flow, but also the power quality in the building, in a
transparent manner. In this way, it is possible to identify disruptive influences arising between different plants.
The devices are soon integrated into the powermanager power monitoring software and can then also be parameterized by means of
powerconfig.

Communication target groups

The main target group comprises existing power monitoring customers in industry. Here, engineering technologists should be addressed. First, network problems
have already been encountered in own production because of external or internal interferences. Second, the power quality is an important criterion for the proper
function of the product (or of the plant) with their customers. Switchgear engineers, energy consultants and management can be addressed with similar arguments.

SIMATIC Energy Suite in TIA Portal

SIMATIC Energy Suite as an integrated option for the TIA Portal

efficiently links energy management with automation and thus
creates energy transparency in your production system.
In addition, simplified programming of energy-measuring
components, for example, 7KM PAC measuring devices and 3VA
molded case circuit breaker, significantly reduces the amount of
work for configuration.
Due to the integrated interface to upstream energy management
systems or cloud-based services, you can seamlessly expand the
recorded energy data to a cross-site energy management system.

You can find more information about SIMATIC Energy Suite at

Usecase: Remote diagnostics of faults at machines and sites
7KM PAC5200 measuring devices

Description Advantage and effect

Recognizing problems in the grid as a reason for disturbances of the machine is without permanently PQ
value recording only very conditionally possibly.
The operator reported irregularities after delivery
and putting into operation of a machine. Setting • Fast and clear assignment of the cause (Grid or malfunction of the machine).
values are lost principally on sunny days. • Remote diagnosis by web server possible.

By supervising the machine power supply and

recording of the values with a PQ measurement
device, disturbances could be proved in the supply
grid as a cause. Further analysis showed that
these were caused by a faulty PV inverter in the
grid which runs on high power on sunny days. Used products: 7KM PAC5200 measuring device

Usecase: Early identifying of interference sources and avoid of subsequent
disturbances – 7KM PAC5200 measuring devices

Description Advantage and effect

By continuous recording and evaluation of PQ relevant measurements, interference sources in the grid could
be recognized and fixed early.
While some routine evaluations the EN50160

Uses 17 7KM PAC measuring devices and powermanager

Customer:
Precision tool manufacturer Mader GmbH & Co. KG | Pfaffenhausen, Allgäu, Germany
The tool manufacturer Mader
designed their new manufacturing
location for more energy efficiency
using the power monitoring system
from the SENTRON portfolio

Realizing savings potential at new production location:

• The powermanager software monitors and archives electrical parameters, like voltage, current, power, energy values,
and frequencies
• Having complete control over the electric energy flows means that power peaks can be prevented, and additional
savings potentials can be realized

Customer:
Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology (IISB) in Erlangen
Fraunhofer IISB uses our power
monitoring system for researching
new options of efficient energy
utilization at an industrial scale

Exact measurements as basis for research:

• Researchers must know exactly which energy flow occurs where and how
• The measurements encompass various forms of energy, like electric power, power generation from three photovoltaic
systems, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and air conditioning
