INVERSION: When you begin a sentence with a

NEGATOR or a RESTRICTIVE you must have an


inversion between verb and subject (as if you were
asking a question ).This is a feature of the written
language and is used for EMPHASIS.

- when we say that one thing happened immediately


after another: hardly/scarcely followed by when
eg. Hardly/scarcely had I arrived when he left.

- no sooner followed by than


eg. No sooner had we started lunch than the doorbell
rang.
Examples:
1)At no time was she aware of what was
happening.
2)Under no circumstances can this
money be refunded.
3)On no account are visitors allowed to
feed the animals.
4)In no way can Peter be held
responsible.
1) She never subscribes to that magazine.
Never......................................................
2)He only understood the film when it reached the end.

3)Paul has hardly seen Mary this week.
Hardly...............................................
4)They miss little of the sports page.
Little............................................
5)She will rarely read the editorials.

either.

NOTE: only / not until and not even introduce adverbial clauses ,
and the inversion comes in the second part of the sentence.
Key:
1)Never does she subscribe to that magazine.
2)Only when the film reached the end did he understand it.
3)Hardly has Paul seen Mary this week.
4)Little do they miss of the sports page.
5)Rarely will she read the editorials.
6)Not only did she pass the exam but she also got
distinction.
7)Neither has Paul nor has Mary undestood the problem.
8)No sooner did she arrive than he left.
9)Under no circumstances does Mary read magazines.
10)Only after I have had a drink can I relax.
11)Not until he saw the damage in daylight did he realise
it.
12)Nowhere else can you see such large forests.
