May 25,1888- March 1889


Rizal lived in London for 3 reasons;
In order to improve his command to English Language
To research and annotate Morga’s sucesos la Isla Filipinas
which he heard was preserved in the British Museum
London was safe haven from Spanish Tyranny
Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor- a lawyer in London
End of may, Rizal become a boarder of Beckett
Morga’s Sucesos Isla Filipinas, historical rare books about the Philippines
Dr. Rost, a ministry of foreign affairs librarian and an expert Malayan
languages and customs
• He was so impressed with Rizals knowledge and personality that he gladly
recommend him to the British authorities
• Rizal was dubbed una perla de hombre“a pearl of man” by him
Rizal was deeply immersed on his historical studies in London for 10
months
 September 1888- Rizal went to Paris for a week to look for more historical material in the
Bibliotheque Nationale
 Juan luna and his wife entertained him

 December 11, 1888- he travelled to Spain


 Visiting madrid and barcelona
 Assessed political situation
 He met the two titan of propaganda movement, Marcelino Ponce and Marcelo H. Del Pilar

 December 24, 1888- Rizal returned to London


 He spent christmas and new year with the beckett
 Two book given by Mrs. Beckett to Rizal

 The Ventriloquist
 Rizal was elected as a honorary president of association La Solidaridad, a patriotic society
dedicated to reform.
 La Solidaridad was founded in Barcelona on december 13 1888
 December 31 ,1888 it was officially inaugurated

 Los Agricultores Filipinos in the La Solidaridad- Rizal’s first published article


 A patriotic newspaper was founded by Graciano Lopez Jaena on March 25 1889
 Contributed articles to Dr. Rost journal
 Specimens of Tagalog Folklore, Two Eastern Fables (La Vision del Fray Rodriguez ,Letter to
the young women of Malolos)
 Rizal fell in love with Gertrude Beckett
 Rizal left London for Paris on March 19,1888

 Rizal travelled to Paris


 Universal exposition 0n May 5 1889
 He published his annotated book edition of Morga’s sucesos de las islas Filipinas

 Leonor Rivera also married a British Engnr.
 July 5 1891- Rizal left Brussels for Ghent to find cheapest price for the publication of the
book
 He has limited sources and even living in a low-cost boarding house

 F. Meyer-Van-Loo- who was willing to print his book on a monthly basis, he even pawned
all his jewels to cover his expences
 He was paid money from Jose Mabosa , and 200 from Varisto Arias in exchange for his
copies of Morga Sucesos in Manila

 Valentin Ventura-who send necessary funds when he learned that the novel El Fili was
dedicated to the Martyrdom of the GomBurGa
 Don Mariano Gomez
 Jose Burgos they were executed on feb.28 ,1872 at Bagumbayan
 Jacinto Zamora
