    Meaning of Writ:
    An Order from the Supreme Court (Art 32) or High Court (Art 226) that
    commands constitutional remedies for Indian Citizens against the violation of their
    fundamental rights.

    Writ Meaning Purpose


    Habeas Corpus To have the body To release a person who has been detained
    of unlawfully

    Mandamus We command To secure performance of public duties by lower


    court, tribunals or public authority.
    Prohibition To Forbid To prevent a lower court from exceeding its
    jurisdiction or usurping a jurisdiction that it does
    not possess.

    Certiorari To be Certified To squash the order passed by a lower court or to


    transfer a case pending before the lower court.

    Quo Warranto By what authority To restrain a person from holding a public office to
    which he is not entitled.
