Social Foundations of
Education
The social foundations of education focus
on the social structure and study of
human connections that contribute to
the growth and development of the
student as a socially efficient
individual which explains the
relevance of the sociological
foundations of education to the
current educational system.

Several disciplines and fields
to examine education
History
Philosophy
International education
Cultural Studies
Sociology
Political Science
HISTORY

-is the study of life in society in the

past, in all its aspect, in relation to
present developments and future
hopes. It is the story of a man in time,
an inquiry into the past based on
evidence. Indeed, evidence is the raw
material of history teaching and
learning.
Philosophy

-is the systematized study of

general and fundamental
questions such as those
concerning existence, reason,
knowledge, values, mind, and
language.
International
Education
- refers to a dynamic concept
that involves a journey or
movement of people, minds, or
ideas across political and
cultural frontiers. It is
facilitated by the globalization
phenomenon, which increasingly
erases the constraints of
geography on economic, social
and cultural arrangements.
Cultural Studies
-is an interdisciplinary field that
examines the political dynamics of
contemporary culture and its
historical foundations. Cultural
studies researchers generally
investigate how cultural practices
relate to wider systems of power
associated with, or operating through,
social phenomena.
Sociology

-is a social science that focuses on

society, human social behavior
patterns of social relationships, social
interaction, and aspects of culture
associated with everyday life.
Political Science

-is the scientific study of politics.

It is a social science dealing with
systems of governance and
power, and the analysis of
political activities, political
institutions, political thought
and behavior, and associated
constitutions and laws.
Three Main Theories:
1.The functionalist theory- focuses on the ways that universal
education serves the needs of society. Functionalists first see
education in its manifest role conveying basic knowledge and skills
to the next generation.

2.Conflict theory- sees the purpose of education as maintaining

social inequality and preserving the power of those who dominate
society. Conflict theory examine the same functions of education
as functionalists.

3.Symbolic interactions- limit their analysis of education to what

they directly observe happening in the classroom.
PROPONENTS OF SOCIAL FOUNDATIONS OF
EDUCATION.

1.EMILE DURKHIEM- a prominent sociologist, emphasized the

role of maintaining social order. He believed that education should
transmit the shared values, beliefs, and norms of a society to its
members. According to Durkhiem, education plays a crucial role in
preparing individuals to be productive members of society and to
internalize societal expectations.
- The founder of functionalist theory, identified the latent role of
education as one of socializing people into society’s mainstream.
2. PIERRE BOURDIEU- a French sociologist, introduced the concept of
cultural capital to explain the relationship between education and social
inequality. He argued that educational institutions tend to perpetuate existing
social hierarchies by favoring students from privileged backgrounds who
possess cultural capital (such as knowledge, skills, and habits) that align with
the dominant culture. Bourdieu emphasized the role of social class, cultural
production, and symbolic power in shaping educational outcomes.

3.PAULO FREIRE- a Brazilian educator and philosopher, is known for his

influential work on critical pedagogy. He believed that education should be
liberating and transformative, challenging appresive systems and empowering
marginalized individuals. Freire advocated for a dialogic approach to
education, where students and teachers engage in a mutual process of
learning and reflection, fostering critical consciousness and social justice.

4.ROBERT ROSENTHAL AND LENORE JACOBSON-conducted the

landmark study for this approach in 1968. They examined a group of students
with standard IQ tests.
