OSGOOD-SCHRAMM

MODEL OF
COMMUNICATION
The Osgood-Schramm model shows that both the
sender and the receiver can transmit and receive
the message making it a cycle of communication.
Wilbur
Schramm

It involves encoding, where the sender

translates the message and decoding, where
the receiver creates meaning out of the sent
message. Charles Egerton Osgood

MESSAGE
“It is a Circular Model, so that
communication is something
circular in nature”
ENCODER- Who encodes or sends the
message (message originates)
DECODER- Who receives the message.
INTERPRETER- Person trying to understand
(analyzes, perceive) or interpret.
The Osgood-Schramm model takes into account
semantic barriers, such as the social context and
the differences in background, culture, etc.. This is
Wilbur called field of experience.
Schramm

Semantic barriers or noises dictate the path

of the communication event, especially the
interpretation of the messaged received.
Charles Egerton Osgood
Features of the Osgood-Schramm
Communication Model
Non-traditional – shows a circular (non-
linear) model and assumes a cyclical
process.
Dynamic – accounts for the changes and
the complex multitasking during
communication events.
Features of the Osgood-Schramm
Communication Model
 Simultaneous – Encoding, Interpretation, and Decoding
all take place simultaneously on both parties, therefore
no distinction between sender and receiver
 Semantic noise – suggests that a person’s field of
experience influences the conversation, not just the
actual message being decoded.

• Captain Francis replied with a robotic promise to Country Woman
Monica, and did not hide that he is in a hurry.
