What is listening?
It is the active process by which we
make sense of, assess, and respond to
what we hear.

Listening is an important part of

connecting with and learning from
others. Learning to be a better listener
prepares us to understand the lives and
needs of others, as well as absorb
information that might be pertinent to
our own experience
Are you a good listener?
What are the qualities of good
listeners?

1. They are fully engaged.

This means that you fully present in the

current task. You’re processing information as
it’s told to you. You avoid all distractions to
remain focused.
What are the qualities of good
listeners?

2. They never interrupt.

Good listeners are patient. They wait until

the message has been fully transmitted to
make a point. They don’t aim to dominate
the conversation, but rather try to listen the
same amount or even more than they
verbally contribute.
What are the qualities of good
listeners?

3. They show they are listening.

Good listeners show that they’re engaged by

using active body language. This may include
nodding or leaning in to show agreement or
to encourage the speaker to continue. One of
the best ways to show you’re listening is to
keep eye contact with the speaker or even
ask follow-up questions.
What are the qualities of good
listeners?
4. They summarize what they
have heard.
Good listeners  respond with a summary that
clarifies and processes what the speaker has
just said.
