ABSTRACT

Regenerative braking systems (RBS) is an effective method of recovering the energy

released and at the same time reducing the exhaust and brake emissions of vehicles.
This method is based on the principle of converting the kinetic energy created by the
mechanical energy of the motor into electrical energy. The converted electrical energy
is stored in the battery for later use. This braking system must meet maximum energy
recovery criteria by performing its function safely within the shortest braking distance.
This study was conducted to provide comprehensive information about regenerative
energy systems. These systems provide economic benefits via fuel savings and
prevention of material loss. Their use also contributes to a clean environment and
renewable energy sources, which are among the most important issues on the global
agenda.

INTRODUCTION

 We are slowly reaching the age of electric vehicles. The major issue behind the mass usage of
electric vehicles is the battery charging time and lack of charging stations.
 So here the regenerative breaking system comes into the picture. This system allows a vehicle to
generate energy each time when ever the brakes are applied. The stronger the brakes, the more
power is generated.
 We use friction lining arrangement in a brake drum. As a drum rotates, the friction lining does not
touch the drum. As soon as the brakes are applied, the friction lining touches the drum from inside
and moves the motors connected to lining in same direction, thus generating electricity using
motors as dynamo.
 Thus this system allows for charging vehicles battery each time whenever the brakes are applied,
thus providing a regenerative braking system.
 It moves us another step ahead towards a pollution free transportation system.

 A test bench for testing of regenerative braking capability of a Brushless DC Motor is design and then
fabricated. The project creates awareness to engineers towards energy efficiency and energy
conservation. It concludes that the regenerative braking systems are more efficient at higher speed and
it cannot be used as the only brakes in a vehicle.
 The advantages of regenerative braking system over conventional braking system has been mentioned.
Regenerative braking systems can work at the high temperature ranges and are highly efficient when
compared to the conventional brakes.
 They are more effective at higher momentum. The more frequently a vehicle stops, the more it can benefit
from this braking system.
 The techniques to increase the efficiency of the regenerative braking system is mentioned. The technique
mentioned was to reduce the weight of the automobile which increase performance, using super capacitor
also improves the conversion rate of energy in regenerative braking system, making the automobile
compact also tends to increase the efficiency of the system.
 The Fabrication process on the Regenerative Braking System had been implemented as per the prescribed
measures has been taken and the future enhancements should be processed on basis of the need of the
study. The Implementation of the regenerative braking system be quite essential in automotive
transportation with maximized performance in braking.
WHAT ARE BRAKES?
REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM

 When the motor is run in the opposite direction, a properly

designed motor becomes an ELECTRIC GENERATOR,
converting Mechanical energy into Electrical energy.

 In a regenerative braking system, the energy normally lost in

the braking process is transferred to the generator from the
rotating secondary wheels and then transferred to the battery,
thus saving energy.
COMPONENTS REQUIRED
WORKING PRINCIPLE IN HYBRID VEHICLES

 Vehicles driven by electric motors use

the motor as a generator when using
regenerative braking.
 It is operated as a generator during braking
and its output is supplied to an electrical load,
the transfer of energy to the load provides
the braking effect.
 Many modern hybrid and electric vehicles use
this technique to extend the range of the
battery pack.
OBJECTIVES

 To control the speed of the vehicle as well as to stop it quickly and efficiently
without sticking.
 To reduce the reaction time of braking by using regenerative braking and generating.
 Power by converting kinetic energy into electrical energy.

 Chevy Volt
BENEFITS OF REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM

Wear reduction
Increase the lifespan of friction braking system
Smaller accessories
Increase of overall energy efficiency of a vehicle
This braking system will increase the vehicle’s fuel economy
It permits for conventional brakes based on friction
It extends the battery charge.
LIMITATIONS

The friction brake is a necessary back-up in the event of failure of the

regenerative brake.
Added weight-extra component can increase weight.
Safety primary concern with any energy storage unit of high energy
density.
Added maintenance requirements dependent on the complex of
design.
Cost of components, engineering, manufacturing and installation is
high.
APPLICATIONS OF REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM

For recovering Kinetic energy of vehicle lost during braking process.

Regenerative braking system is used in some elevator and crane hoist
motors.
One theoretical application of regenerative braking would be in a
manufacturing plant that moves material from one workstation to another
on a conveyer system that stops at each point.
DC motors, Induction motors, electric traction etc.
RESULT

 After the successful testing, the model is operated and the results obtained is
between 4-9 V for various speeds of rotation of brake drum.
 The efficiency of the regenerative braking systems using D.C Motors increases if
the angular velocity of the motor increases and hence the regenerative braking
systems are more efficient because of higher angular velocities and the
recoverable energy increases with increase in the motor speed.
 The losses are higher at lower speed because the motors are inefficient at lower
speeds, whereas the losses at higher speeds are mainly mechanical losses like
friction losses and air drag.
CONCLUSION

 The energy efficiency of a conventional brake is only about 20 percent, with the
remaining 80 percent of its energy being converted to heat through friction.
 The good thing about regenerative braking system is that it may be able to capture
as much as half of that wasted energy and put it back to work.
 This reduces fuel consumptions by 10 to 25 percent.
 This system is mostly used in EV’s and hybrid vehicles.
 It will increases engine efficiency and overall vehicle efficiency.
