ON Miriam has created a space for more Puerto Rican actors and
actresses in Hollywood. It is important to learn about people like her
and truly see the value of representation. As Puerto Ricans we
deserve to take up space in Hollywood.
MIRIAM COLÓN
● Born: August 20th, 1936
○ Ponce, Puerto Rico
● Died: March 3rd, 2017
○ New York City
● Attended Roman Baldorioty de Castro High school
● Acting throughout her adolescence gained her
scholarships to the Dramatic Workshop and technical
Institute and the Actors Studio
● Made her film debut at 15 in “Los Peloteros”, which is
considered a classic in Puerto Rico

● She has been a pillar of Puerto Rican representation in the theater and filmmaking industry throughout her
career.

● Her story continues to inspire so many creative women in our country to continue to disperse our history
and our cultural identity no matter the career field we choose to be in.

● We deserve to see more people who look, act, and talk like us in movies and TV shows to continue to be
more connected to who we are and where we come from.

● During junior high she auditioned for her first play “accidentally”. Without knowing what the term
audition meant, she followed some girls who simply stated that they were auditioning and reading for a
play

● Founder and longtime artistic director of the first bilingual theater in New York City

● In 1993, she received an Obie Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater

● In september 2015 she received a National Medal of the Arts from then-president Barack Obama
