Classification of Communities

Classification of Communities
• Communities can be classified on the basis of the following criteria:
• 1. Size
• 2. Extend of Dependency
• 3. Density
• 4. Age
• 5. Quality of life
1. Size of the Community
Size is a useful basis for classifying communities,
from small hamlet to large cities.
2. Extent of Dependency
• Another factor which help us to understand classification of the
communities i.e. extend of dependency.
• Intra-depandant communities just like hunting and gathering
communities, small agro-based communities which grow and consume.
They do not need high technologies etc.
• Inter-depandant communities
• Modern communities which have multiples needs and requirements.
They depend on rural communities for provision of raw material while
urban communities in the form of high quality services such as health,
education, sanitation, knowledge, technologies etc.
3. Density
• Rural and Urban Communities
• Population Density = Number of People / Land Area.
• It refers to the degree of concentration of people in a particular areas.
• It also refers to number of person per unit area
• Density:
• Total population/ total area of the country
• People per squire k.m. of land area
4. Age of communities
• Old hunting and gathering communities
5. Quality of Life
