COMPARISON
Ступені порівняння прикметників
В англійській мові є три ступені порівняння
прикметників:
■ звичайний (Positive Degree),
■ вищий (Comparative Degree),
■ найвищий (Superlative Degree).
 Лише якісні прикметники англійської мови
можуть мати ступінь порівняння, чиє значення
може бути виражене в більшій чи меншій мірі:
new (новий – звичайна форма) –
newer (новіший – вищий ступінь порівняння) –
the newest (найновіший – найвищий ступінь
порівняння)
 Comparatives:
short adjectives
(односкладові, двоскладові)
■ We add -er to short adjectives to make the comparative
form.
■ We write than after the comparative.
 Comparatives:
long adjectives
(багатоскладові)
■ We add more to long adjectives when we compare
things.
■ We write more before a long comparative adjective.
■ We write than after a comparative adjective.
 Superlative degree
• We add -est to short adjectives to make the superlative
form.
• We add most to long adjectives.
• We write most before a long comparative adjective.
Важливо пам’ятати, що незалежно від того, як
утворюється найвищий ступінь прикметника, перед
ним вимагається вживання означеного артиклю the:
• the oldest – настаріший
• the softest – найм’якіший
• the happiest – найщасливіший
.
