Charging can occur through friction, conduction, or induction. Charging by friction involves rubbing two materials together, which causes electrons to transfer between the materials. Charging by conduction is the direct transfer of electrons through contact between a charged and uncharged object. Charging by induction does not require direct contact; it occurs when a charged object is brought near a conductor and creates an electric field that moves the conductor's electrons. Examples of each type of charging process are provided.

b. Give examples of each type of charging process. CHARGING means gaining or losing electron. Matters can be charged with three ways, charging by friction, charging by contact and charging by induction. When you rub one material to another, they are charged by friction. Material losing electron is positively charged and material gaining electron is negatively charged. CHARGING BY FRICTION involves rubbing of two different materials against each other which may cause the transfer of electrons from one material to another. CONDUCTION CHARGING PROCESS is the transfer of electrons from a charged object to another object by direct contact. Induction happens when a charged object is brought near, but doesn’t touch a conductor. Because of attraction between opposite charges and repulsion between like charges, the electrons in a conductor will move around when a charged object comes near. The charge object will create an electric field that pushes or pulls the electrons within the conductor. Charging by friction - the process which an object gets charged when it is rubbed against another object or there is a direct contact between two objects. Charging by conduction - the process in which an object gets charged by making contact with a charged object. Charging by induction - the process in which an object gets by charged object without direct contact CONDUCTION CHARGING PROCESS is the transfer of electrons from a charged object to another object by direct contact. Induction happens when a charged object is brought near, but doesn’t touch a conductor. EXAMPLES: CHARGING BY FRICTION 1. A bit of paper is attracted to the comb after using it. 2. a charged balloon can stick to the wall by attraction 3. a charged rod can pull a stream of water towards it 4. rubbing a balloon with wool CHARGING BY CONDUCTION (Examples) 1. a positively charged aluminum plate is touched to a neutral metal sphere. The neutral metal sphere becomes charged as the result of being contacted by the charged aluminum plate 2. The two balloons have the same charge causing them to move away from each other CHARGING BY INDUCTION (Examples) 1. The leaves of the electroscope(yellow ) move separately when the charged rod is placed near the electroscope 2. Thunder clouds carry a vast amount of negative charges at the bottom and an equal amount of corresponding positive charges at the top. When they loom over us in the gloomy sky, positive charges are induced on the objects on the ground, as a result of electrostatic induction. • Learning Task 1: • Direction: Identify the following if it is an example of charge by Friction, Conduction or Induction. Write your answer on the line before each number. Learning Task 2: Learning Task 2: Write true if the statement is correct and false if not. 1. Charging means gaining and loosing electrons 2. Charging by friction involves rubbing of two different materials against each other which may cause the transfer of electrons from one material to another 3. Rubbing a balloon with wool is an example of induction 4. The leaves of the electroscope(yellow ) move separately when the charged rod is placed near the electroscope 5. When you rub one material to another, they are charged by friction
